Here is the situation, i started to get random freezes, so did a little research and said it could be a driver issue or hardware, so I uninstalled pretty much all the hardware that didn't come with the computer. ( linksys ethernet nic) Still was freezing, then i started to do a fresh install of my XP SP2 disc, all was going well until it froze during the 39 min mark, after a full format, and a reboot was done. I installed RAM about a year ago, so not really sure what it is. Also I did reset the bios to default settings. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
    Dell Dimension 2400
    Bios A05
    wintec ampo Ram DDR 2700
    WD 40 IDE HD

When setup stops ( "hangs "), do the following:

    1. Remove the CD from the CDROM and reboot
    2. Don't enter the CD when the installation asks for it, instead open the DOS prompt (Shift + F10)
    3. goto C:\Windows (cd \windows), type setupapi.log, hit enter
    4. The setupapi.log file opens
    5. Scroll to the very last few lines in the file and search for the word inf
    6. You will notice that in the last few moments the installation created a file with the extension .inf before stalling out
    7. It means that the device mentioned in the last few lines is faulty and you have to get your installation to skip it.
    8. Close setupapi.log and go to the folder C:\windows\inf (cd C:\windows\inf at the command prompt
    9. Delete the inf file you identified above (eg: del mdmcdp.inf)
    10. Next put in the XP installation CD and continue the installation

You can also review the Pnplog.txt, the Setupact.log file, and the Setuperr.log file to try to determine which device Setup was trying to detect when it stopped responding. To locate the device that is the most likely cause of the issue, read the last 10 to 15 lines at the end of the files.

If the log files do not indicate the cause of the issue, try removing hardware to determine which device is causing Setup to stop responding. Remove any external hardware, such as attached devices that are not required for setup (for example, printers, external serial devices, and Universal Serial Bus [USB] devices).

Hey Arie thanks for getting back to me. I go to the seyup log files, but scrolling down to the bottom, it froze, did it three times, so I am not able to get to the bottom.
I had a couple of keyboard failures on the start up screen, as well as, a long pause at the Dell logo screen.
The only attached hardware is a vga cable, keyboard mouse via PS/2, and power supply. Tryied to reboot with out the mouse attached also.
    Ideas?

Quick update, was able to view the last few lines, I saw INF, but not the entire line, it was the MS_MMDRV.NT.interfaces preceded the INF/????? Where the questions marks are, is where I was unable to see the full word.

If I were you I'd run the Dell diagnostics for your machine.

Dell support: I could, but I hate dealing with them, I would rather read threads and do it myself, Which I am getting really frustrated, because, now it just freezes and can't get to the bottom of the setup log. It has been off for a while so I am going to try again. I feel like trashing the inside and just put in new parts.

Arie, yeah he is helpful as are the other moderators that have helped in the past!

Well, if your diagnostics come back without problem, it could be the CD. Make sure it is clean and without any scratches.

I'm not sure what Dell's policy is regarding sending you a replacement CD.

Arie, I believe your right. I built another machine, used the same cd-rom drive and disc, after the initial setup, rebooted, it came back as disc read error. I tried the same thing on another burner, same reading, then I popped in an retail xp pro disc and now i am installing it.
I want to thank you for your help, ad I look forward to another back and forth problem solving session, I hope you do too.

    Aloha
