    Sorry, missed the earlier posts.

    Chas,

Can you install the drive as a slave?

As kimsland posted in the other thread please only have one active at a time, conflicting advice causes you and us problems.

May I suggest you resolve both these threads and ignore further posts in them. Start a (one;))new clean thread and give a summary of what you've done up to now.

    I agree with above ^^
But you could also do this in the meantime

    You mean Windows loading froze.

Do you have any data to backup?

Download Knoppix (free BootCD and OS)
Click on the large Download box
Select a download Server close to you
    Accept the download agreement
Download the ISO and burn to CD
Note: I use free ImgBurn to burn ISO images

Once the disc has been made, boot from it and startup Knoppix
You will need a USB drive or blank CD to backup your data

Suferdude, I'd like your help on this.
I looked in the registry at
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup
and couldn't find any of the entries you suggested.
Not sure where to look/what to do now.

It exists on mine, and I keep everything default so as when supporting I see what the OP (thread starter) sees

I would suggest that you backup all important data (whilst you can)
Then update (purchase) a Windows disc that matches your hard drive (or put a smaller drive back in)
    Then install Windows clean!

    How about that?

Presently your Windows setup disc is useless with your installed hardware

The disc I have is the disc I used for the install. Why would I need a different one?

    Why is this?

Then how on earth was I able to set up the bleedin' drive in the 1st place (w/ the disc I still have)?
This all seems so illogical.

I may have to do this, but it doesn't answer my question in post #29.

My drive has several partitions, w/ C: holding XP and my programs, and I don't have backup software that will do incrementals. How would I go about just redoing the C: partition?

Backup all User data to externally connected Hard Drive (as you may be aware you can get Terabyte (huge amount of space) drives these days
Or if your User data is not that much then use a Flash drive or blank CD/DVDs.
There is a further option of having a small home network to another computer (if available) and copy/paste to a new shared folder on another computer.

I've always liked the idea of Copy then Paste, but I wouldn't do this on multiple folders with gigs of data all at the same time.
What I do is scan all the User data folders with my updated Antivirus first, then I disconnect from the Internet and disable all real time scanning (this seems to help on large gigs of data to be transferred)
If you do have large amounts of data in multiple folders you would be best to select a few folders at a time to confirm they copied successfully to the external drive (or external media or network)

Once confirmed all data is successfully backed up, then you can continue the clean install. HERE's a Guide for that.
If you wish to create multiple partitions again, when you get to the XP Setup screen that states: "To create a partition in the unpartitioned space, press C." Press C and continue creating multiple partitions (if you want to) at what size you prefer. Obviously allowing the first partition to be large enough to carry Windows and all programs to be installed.

Once the multiple Partitions are all setup, continue installing Windows on the first partition.
Note: Do not need to manually select NTFS format, as Windows will automatically use NTFS on an unpartitioned drive. I also select "Quick" format, as some large drives just take too long to do a full (slow) format.

Once Windows is all clean installed, then update to Windows Service Pack 3 and install an Antivirus software, I recommend Free Avira (of which I use)
Then return all your backed up data to your other clean formatted partitions.

    Does that help? :)

SubNote: You may also want to back up all Drivers, before clean install
A free tool to do this would be DriverMax
Although generally all your updated drivers, for your computer and hardware, are located online at your computer or motherboard (or other installed hardware) manufacturer support web page. In your case your updated computer drivers are found here: GA-K8NF-9

    That was a mouthful!
Yes, it does help, and thank you. I appreciate that you even took the time to locate my motherboard drivers. :)
My C: partition is only 33GB. Can't I just redo that partition? It was explained to me sometime back that way - should anything go wrong.

Honestly I don't trust the data will remain safe :D

Best to backup and clean install fully

OK, I have a 2nd 750GB drive that I can clone it to, and then copy the data back to the main drive after reformatting. Any other suggestions?
I know I won't get to this until at least Tues or Wed, so if you think of something there's time.
    I appreciate your help. :)

    Just had a thought. (I know, you're thinking "amazing! ") :D
What about copying all the programs separately and then back, to save finding and loading them later? (Sounds good on paper.)
I'm trying to make this as painless as possible.

You know I haven't read your 1,189 posts
Are they all asking for support? (not that there's anything wrong with that)

No you cannot copy programs, you must use the installer to install them
When programs are installed they are installed to many folder locations on your computer, including the Registry.

In saying that, I once looked at a program backup (full program backup) software, I tried it, I didn't like it.

Best to use the downloaded newest versions or Setup Cd to install any programs ;)

Kim, My machine has slowed down and suddenly MP3s are skipping. What's the deal?
Last night's virus scan (Avira) showed nothing.

Is this after a clean install?

If so then confirm all Windows updates have been completed, and confirm that all manufacturer drivers are up to date from your support driver page.
Also what program are you using to listen to your MP3s?

By the way, sorry about my last comment about your posts, I am happy to help members if they have 1 post or 100k, and anywhere in between
