    Hi,

I'm going to get a netbook with a 10.1" or 11.6" screen just to use it outdoors. It should not be hungry for battery power but not too slow.
Which of the two processors would be faster? This one: Intel Celeron 743 (1,3GHz, 800MHz, 1MB Cache ) or this one: Intel Atom Processor N450 (512K Cache, 1.66 GHzm 667MHz)

The Atom processor has a higher clock frequency but less cache instead.

Any other recommendations are welcome. Thanks.

    Ralf

Those are pretty close speed wise...But I'd go with the Atom;)

The Intel® Atom™ processor was designed from the ground up for low power and innovative devices, enabling a broad range of new devices from Mobile Internet Devices (MIDs) to netbooks and entry-level desktop PCs, and more.

Thanks for your input. I'm interested in the newest Sony Vaio W21S1E. Do you think it's worth getting? The downside is its glossy LCD and only two USB slot available. Also, quite few netbooks are equipped with a 3G modem, which is not good.

I think the the downside of Netbooks is a lack of an optical (CD/DVD) drive. If you want to install programs onto it, you need to look at how you can do it.

I see laptops as being a mobile computer, it is a PC (to an extent) you can take from one place and use it at another. A Netbook is an "in-between" of those places, it means you can work on things in-between locations.

You might want it to be a high-powered laptop (or be able to run the lastest first-person shooter :D), but it is going to be a Netbook (note: NETbook). It is probably best running around the internet.

If your aim is internet browsing, the processor (CPU), shouldn't be a bottleneck. It is much faster than an internet connection.

Look at what are the major applications you want run, if it is the internet, look at the internet connection and how it appears (as you mention). The hardware itself might not be a factor.

Put the model numbers into a websearch along with the term "review ". The results should cover the areas you are interested in.

Find out what areas you interested in (how you want to "apply" the machine).

Thanks a lot, Mattman. Yes, you're right.
Do you think that upgrading the RAM to 2 GB after purchasing that Sony Vaio 10.1" Intel Atom N450 (originally equipped with 1 GB RAM) will give it some extra power or it won't be much noticeable?

List all of the application you intend on running?
    Which OS will it use?

If you'll just be surfing the internet - get the cheapest thing you can find.

It'll use Windows 7 Starter 32-bit. I'm going to install an email client, most likely TheBat! email client, Opera Internet browser, and maybe an instant messenger also. From the documentation on Sony Vaio I know that it allows to upgrade RAM to 2 GB max.

More RAM in those applications will allow you to open more webpages or emails at once, but 1GB should be fine. When I first got Vista, I ran 1GB of RAM for a few years. I could have 40-50 webpages open before performance started to suffer. If you want to stream audio or video, you might need to reduce unnecessary open webpages or other applications.

Will you install a printer? The multifunction printers I have installed lately can use over 1GB of disk space and run all sorts of background (helper) programs. You need to watch out for what you might install from the internet that would load in the background.

If you can remember back to a mid-sized P4 desktop or laptop, it should run like one of those. If you don't intend to install much else or open "heaps" of webpages, emails, etc, at once, it should be more than happy with 1GB of RAM.

    Matt
Edit: Check how much of the RAM is used by the graphics adapter. That will cut down on the amount of RAM available for the system.

I have a new Dell 1012 with the Atom 450 and 1Gb of RAM running Windows 7 starter. On first boot it shows that 50+% of the RAM is being used, no programs open.
The Atom is basically a dual core and from what I understand, the second core is the gpu.
Point is, it runs really well for what it is. 2.4 on the Windows 7 performance rating and that because of the cpu.
I run Opera on it with half a dozen tabs open with no probs. Very happy with it.

I have a netbook, Acer 150-1635 with the Atom N270 1.6 gig processor, 1 gig DRAM. It will do everything well except Zune.

All it does routinely is manage a 1Tb external HDD with music and video; and a wee bit of crunching for BOINC projects and one WCG project. Beyond that I will use it if my two Core 2 Duo machines are tied up.

At what I am doing, I am very happy with this US$299.99 machine.

But it is very slow. I understand that the Atom N450 is even slower, all other variables held constant.
