[Active] Cannot connect thru IE

Hello,

I am having my first experience with malware or a virus or SOMETHING and really need some help please. I got it a few days ago and it locked everything up. I ran several of my free anti-virus and spyware programs and they found a few things which I have eliminated. So far the only remaining issue seems to be not being able to connect to internet through IE. Fortunately I had previously downloaded Firefox, which is how I am connecting now, but I need IE back. I've been to several forums (just reading) about error code 12029 which is the code it gives me and following that advice have gone into the registry and removed one instance of "hp*****.exe" (I can't even remember what it was anymore, sorry.) I restarted after that and it didn't resolve the issue. I'm at a loss as to what to do next. I will post the requested logs below. ???

Hi and welcome to WindowsBBS forums :).

You posted the same DDS log twice. I have deleted one of them. You need to post the Attach.txt log.

I can see an infection there, so can you please do the following;

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (http://www.majorgeeks.com/Malwarebytes_Anti-Malware_d5756.html) to your desktop.

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* At the end, be sure to checkmark the Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Download the update from here if you have problems.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad.
* Post the log back here.

The log can also be found here:
C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt
Or at C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt

Make sure that you restart the computer.

==========

Download HijackThis Executable from here. Save it to your desktop.
Start HJT & press the "Do a system scan and save a log file" button. When the scan is finished a window will pop up giving you the option of where to save it. Save it to desktop where it is easy to access. Open the log file and then go to the format Tab and make sure that wordwrap is unchecked. Copy the entire contents of the file & paste it into the body of your post. DO NOT FIX ANYTHING YET. Most of what is there is necessary for the running of your system.

mbam

fyi on this tho, it couldn't connect to internet, so did not have updated info. I already had malwarebytes and had previously run the scan, but it couldn't connect for updates before I ran it. But I downloaded it again per your request and as it was installing it said error and that it couldn't connect for updates. So don't really know how accurate the scan is. Same thing with my avast and spybot. I couldn't connect to get updates before running them. Will do the hijack this next.

Can you please do the following.

===============

You will have to disable Spybot's Teatimer before we begin, as it will interfere with the fix. To do this can you start Spybot and go to the Mode button and select Advanced. Go to Tools > Resident and uncheck the box next to Tea-Timer. Make sure that the icon in the system tray is no longer there. If it is, just right click on it and select "Exit ".
Download View attachment ResetTeaTimer.zip
Double click ResetTeaTimer.bat to remove all entries set by TeaTimer.
Do not forget to re-enable teatimer when we are done :).
If teatimer gives you a warning afterwards that some changes were made, allow this instead of blocking it.

===============

Can you disable Windows Defender as it may interfere with the removal process. Please leave it disabled until your PC has been given the all clear.
• Open Windows Defender
• Click Tools
• Click General Settings
• Scroll down to Real Time Protection Options
• Uncheck Turn on Real Time Protection (recommended)
• After you uncheck this, click on the Save button
• Close Windows Defender

===============

Go to Add/Remove programs and uninstall the following, if present:

Viewpoint Manager,Viewpoint Media Player,Viewpoint Toolbar

The above could appear anywhere within the entry. Be careful not to remove any personal or system software.

===============

Scan with HijackThis and then place a check next to all the following, if present:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyServer = http=127.0.0.1:5555

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {3CA2F312-6F6E-4B53-A66E-4E65E497C8C0} - (no file)

O23 - Service: Viewpoint Manager Service - Viewpoint Corporation - C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Common\ViewpointService.exe

Now, close all instances of Internet Explorer and any other windows you have open except HiJackThis, click "Fix checked ".

===============

Locate and delete the following item(s), if present. Make sure you are able to view system and hidden files/ folders:

folders...

C:\Program Files\Viewpoint

-

Note that some of these file(s)/folder(s) may or may not be present. If present, and cannot be deleted because they're 'in use', try deleting them in Safe Mode by doing the following:
• Restart your computer
• After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
• Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear.
Select the first option to run Windows in Safe Mode hit enter.

-

Reboot.

===============

Reset your Internet connection by opening Internet Explorer and going to: Tools Menu -> Internet Options -> Connections Tab -> Lan Settings > uncheck "use a proxy server" and check to "Automatically detect settings ".
In Firefox in Tools Menu -> Options... -> Advanced Tab -> Network Tab -> "Settings" under Connection.

After rebooting, rescan with hijackthis and post back a new log. Please let me know how your pc is now.

Well you are amazing! Thank you, thank you, thank you! Everything seems back to normal now. Unbelievable.

In addition to my avast, spybot, windows defender, and malwarebytes, are there other things you would suggest I have on my computer to better defend myself in the future?

Those programs should suit you fine.

I need you to do one more thing before we can clear you for your flight.

Please use the Internet Explorer browser (or FireFox with IETab), and do an online scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner

Note: If you have used this particular scanner before, you MAY HAVE TO UNINSTALL the program through Add/Remove Programs before downloading the new ActiveX component

Click Yes, when prompted to install its ActiveX component.
(Note.. for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the "Accept" button of the license, click on the "Zoom" tool located at the bottom right of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license has been accepted, reset to 100%.)
The program launches and downloads the latest definition files.
• Once the files are downloaded click on Next
• Click on Scan Settings and configure as follows:
• Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
• Extended
• Scan Options:
• Scan Archives
• Scan Mail Bases
• Click OK and, under select a target to scan, select My Computer
When the scan is done, in the Scan is completed window (below), any infection is displayed.
There is no option to clean/disinfect, however, we need to analyze the information on the report.
To obtain the report:
Click on: Save Report As (above - red blinking arrow)
Next, in the Save as prompt, Save in area, select: Desktop
In the File name area, use KScan, or something similar
In Save as type, click the drop arrow and select: Text file [*.txt]
Then, click: Save
Please post the Kaspersky Online Scanner Report in your reply.

Kscan

Kapersky scan results to follow. It did say it found one infected file. Of note however, is that when I was doing the "settings" before even running the scan, there was not an option for "extended ". There were two check-boxes, the first for viruses, trojans, worms, and rootkits and the second for spyware, adware, and dialers. It would not allow me to check the first box and had a note that it was possible that it would not check for viruses if other anti-virus software was running. We still have Windows defender and Spybot turned off, so I turned off the avast and then went back in to the scanner. It still would not let me check the box to check for viruses, trojans, etc. So maybe I need to change something and do the scan again?

I will have to look into that when I get home from work. In the meantime, can you do this;

Download and Run ATF Cleaner
Download ATF (Atribune Temp File) Cleaner© by Atribune to your desktop.

Double-click ATF Cleaner.exe to open it.

Under Main choose:
Windows Temp
Current User Temp
All Users Temp
Cookies
Temporary Internet Files
Prefetch
Java Cache

*The other boxes are optional*
Then click the Empty Selected button.

Firefox:
Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.

Opera:
Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.

Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

==

See if the kaspersky scan picks it up again. You should be able to localise the scan so that it does not take as long.

Kscan

Ok. I did what you said and then re-ran the Kscan. It found nothing this time, but again wouldn't check for trojans, worms, etc.

What's next?

Try the Eset scan.

Please Run the ESET Online Scanner and post the ScanLog with your post for assistance.
• You will need to use Internet Explorer to complete this scan.
• You will need to temporarily Disable your current Anti-virus program.
• Be sure the option to Remove found threats is Un-checked at this time (we may have it clean what it finds at a later time), and the option to Scan unwanted applications is Checked.
• When you have completed that scan, a scanlog ought to have been created and located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt. Please post that log for us as directed below.

IE script error

I ran the ESET scan and will post those results, but while running the scan, a window popped up saying there was an error running scripts on IE and asked if i wanted to continue running scripts or not. It wouldn't let me copy the whole thing, but it let me copy this URL: http://ad.yieldmanager.com/iframe3?...AAAAIAAgAAAAAAZmZmZmZm1j9mZmZmZmbWP2ZmZmZmZtY

Don't know if that means anything to you or not.

Script error looks to have been cookie related. Not a biggie I would imagine :).

eset has come back clean, so if your pc is running ok, you are free to go :).
