    Hi!
I'm running windows XP and I've noticed that the computer starts on its own at night, to run windows/microsoft update. It is set to run at 2AM when the computer is on, but I'm trying to figure out how it gets to start the computer when its off.

    What I've looked into:
Windows was in hibernation at the point. The network cable was unplugged and wake on lan is not enabled in the bios. Wake on AC and wake on USB was also disabled in the bios. The computer is in a docking station by the way.

    Why this is a problem:
You lose the saved hibernation state when windows update is allowed to restart the computer. It dosn't even do a very good job at it, it freezes at restart.

    Background:
This computer is managed in a corporate environment so I have only limited administrator rights on it. I've had to research previous IT problems extensively on my own to have them fixed, so I'm not expecting that our outsourced and understaffed IT department will be of much help here. But in any case, this is hole in my knowledge about windows and computers and I'd be thankfull if you could help me fill it :)

Hi Troglo and welcome to WindowsBBS :)

The best thing to do is control when you do the updates.

Change your settings (Right Click My Computer->Properties->Automatic Updates) to "Download updates for me, but let me choose when to install them. "

You'll be notified when updates are there and you can install at an appropriate time.
