I have a friend at my house for me to charge her battery for Dell Inspiron 1525. She had it at a local repair shop and they replaced the jack where you plug in the power supply, It seems that she is getting no A/C power. It will only run on battery power. The repair shop suggested replacing the mother board, does this sound reasonable?
    Thanks
    Dee

What do you mean by-> Laptop Not Working Without Battery

If it'll run on AC power WITH the battery - leave the battery in...

If it won't run on AC power at all - replacing the mobo is a common solution to a very common problem.

Thanks for your quick response Steve. The battery will not charge on her machine and her machine will only run on battery power. We have tried several different power supplies and that's not the problem. Looks like mother board time.

If the repair shop is a good/relable/authorised type of shop - then yeppers to the new mobo or new lappy....I had a Dell person show up and replace a lappy mobo in under 30 minutes. Boy howdy was I impressed.

Sorry, the local repair shop did replace the jack?
And now they say that its not charging the battery?

They probably put too much heat on the solder point
But since it was faulty before them seeing it, we'll just have to agree that the motherboard had more issues than just the jack. (although I still think Jack or battery connection to motherboard)

The suggestion to replace Mobo is reasonable. Not too high of a cost though, since Laptops are getting pretty cheap these days brand new!
Here's a used 1525 for £81.00 (just a Google hit I'm using as reference, ie don't buy it)

How difficult is ir to replace a motherboard on a laptop? I know that it is a piece of cake on a desk top.
I don't know that her husband will let us do it any way, she's not going to be able to buy a new one, Do you know of a external battery charger?

Some are easy (ie some Dell laptops like CPx model take me 30mins)
Some are very difficult with hundreds of screws
You will need to locate your dissamembly guide on line

Oh you should have been around in the 486 and P1 days, they weren't easy :D

A new laptop computer, or a new Mobo?

Even if they do exist (of which they must I suppose)
I wouldn't do that. Running the laptop on batteries only is 1.Slow 2. Scary, ie you will likely buy a new battery every year (or less)

I'd probably clean the Mobo contacts to the battery
    Re-check the power connector
And possibly sell as is, unless I decided to change the Mobo, but I'd hope not.

I own two 1525's and both had the same problem. The cause was the system board and both rec'd new system boards under warranty. The system board and labor will probably cost more than the unit is worth. Good luck.

    Really?
Do you think it was "reasonable" to do that?
You know two Dells and two motherboards and the cost of the service call may have out weighed a whole brand new laptop!

Are you speaking of under warranty and getting it done for free?
Oh this thread was asking if replacing the motherboard was reasonable. It was already established that the motherboard was at fault. No one has gone against that. Including deester

But thanks for letting him know, he may have thought it was an Operator fault or something!
