Recently I was checking for warranty on a failing disk, & the manufacturers site suggested a firmware update for another disk so I did the right thing? & did the suggested update.

Now when I power up I get a msg in DOS saying "Non-System Disk, press any key" the computer then boots up no problem, all drives are recognised in Windows (Vista) all data is accessible!

How should I go about resolving this issue, I was thinking of re-formatting the disk (500gb Sata), I can move the data on the drive to a temp location so I don't loose anything.

Any Suggestions? It's not a dramatic problem, Just Annoying!!

If you have a USB device attached when you switch on and your motherboard allows USB booting, you need to change the setting in the BIOS to boot from the HDD first.

Another possible coincidental cause is the CMOS battery wants replacing.

Forgive me for pointing out the obvious but you never know...

You haven't left a disk in your floppy drive have you?

    Hi Wildfire,
Never hurts to ask the obvious, but the answer is no, as the update was saved to disk & initiated through the manufacturers updating software.

PS firmware update worked and this is the only drama

Then perhaps your floppy is failing and thinks there's a disk in there...

What's your boot sequence in the BIOS?

CD/Floppy/HDD of choice (currently have 3)

will put this on hold till tomorrow evening after I change the cmos battery & disable the floppy ( rarely use it anyway) and report back then

    A pleasant day/night/evening to all

I'd bet the issue lies in the CMOS abttery.

    Thankyou all,
it seems as though it was the battery and the 2nd battery but the 3rd battery worked must have had more charge than the others, it also showed up an error once the new battery worked, system repaired! all happy again (apart from wife, she hates my computers)
