    [Resolved] Need help with another sick laptop

    I have another laptop from the same friend, but it doesn't seem to be as badly infected as the other machine. I had to take the hard drive out and attach it to another machine to scan it, as I could not get anything to install on it when I received it. I have since installed Malwarebytes, Spybot and Avast, all 3 found and removed a bunch of stuff. As with the other one, I'm sure there's more to do. Here are the DDS logs;

    Please download ComboFix from [color= "Red"]Here[/color] or [color= "#FF0000"]Here[/color] to your Desktop.

    **Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**
    • Please, never rename Combofix unless instructed.
    • Close any open browsers.
    • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
    • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results ".
    • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.
    NOTE 1. If Combofix asks you to install Recovery Console, please allow it.
    NOTE 2. If Combofix asks you to update the program, always do so.

    • Close any open browsers.
    • WARNING: Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet as soon as it starts
    • Please do not attempt to re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
    • If there is no internet connection after running Combofix, then restart your computer to restore back your connection.
    • Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
    • When finished, it will produce a report for you.
    • Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt " along with a new HijackThis log for further review.
    **Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall**

    Make sure, you re-enable your security programs, when you're done with Combofix.

    DO NOT make any other changes to your computer (like installing programs, using other cleaning tools, etc.), until it's officially declared clean!!!

    Download HijackThis:
    http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/tools/security_tools/hijackthis/download
    by clicking on Installer under Version 2.0.2
    [DO NOT download version 2.0.3 (beta)]
    Install, and run it.
    Post HijackTHis log.
    Do NOT attempt to fix anything!

    NOTE. If you're using Vista, or 7, right click on HijackThis, and click Run as Administrator

    Open Windows Explorer. Go Tools>Folder Options>View tab, put a checkmark next to Show hidden files, and folders.
    Upload following files to http://www.virustotal.com/ for security check:
    c:\documents and settings\Raymond\Application Data\wklnhst.dat
    Post scan results.

    ====================================================================================================

    1. Please open Notepad
    • Click Start , then Run
    • Type notepad .exe in the Run Box.

    2. Now copy/paste the entire content of the codebox below into the Notepad window:

    Code:
    File::
    c:\documents and settings\Raymond\Local Settings\Application Data\syssvc.exe

    Folder::

    Driver::

    Registry::

    RegLockDel::

    3. Save the above as CFScript.txt

    4. Then drag the CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe as depicted in the animation below. This will start ComboFix again.

    5. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), please post the following reports/logs into your next reply:
    • Combofix.txt
    • A new HijackThis log.

    Hi Broni,

    I've uninstalled Combofix and run the temp file cleaner. I've tried 3 times to get the Kaspersky scan to run. All 3 times it stops after 8099 files. I've let it sit for over an hour each time, it never goes any further. Is there another offline scanner that can be used? I think this machine is memory constrained, it only has 256 meg installed and I've seen virtual memory messages several times. Not really enough physical memory to be running XP very well.

    Please run a free online scan with the ESET Online Scanner

    • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use
    • Click Start
    • When asked, allow the ActiveX control to install
    • Click Start
    • Make sure that the options Remove found threats and the option Scan unwanted applications is checked
    • Click Scan (This scan can take several hours, so please be patient)
    • Once the scan is completed, you may close the window
    • Use Notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt
    • Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic

    Please download JavaRa to your desktop and unzip it to its own folder
    • Run JavaRa.exe (Vista users! Right click on JavaRa.exe, click Run As Administrator), pick the language of your choice and click Select. Then click Remove Older Versions.
    • Accept any prompts.
    • Open JavaRa.exe again and select Search For Updates.
    • Select Update Using Sun Java's Website then click Search and click on the Open Webpage button. Download and install the latest Java Runtime Environment (JRE) version for your computer.

    Note 1: UNCHECK any pre-checked toolbar and/or software offered with the Java update. The pre-checked toolbars/software are not part of the Java update.

    Note 2: The Java Quick Starter (JQS.exe) adds a service to improve the initial startup time of Java applets and applications. If you don't want to run another extra service, go to Start > Control Panel > Java > Advanced > Miscellaneous and uncheck the box for Java Quick Starter. Click OK and restart your computer.

    ================================================================

    Disable TeaTimer, as it'll interfere with the cleaning process:
    Right click Spybot's TeaTimer System Tray Icon.
    Click Exit Spybot-S&D Resident.
    TeaTimer closes.
    NOTE. If on re-boot, Spybot inquires about registry change(s), allow it.

    Alternatively, I suggest, you uninstall Spybot since it's a tool of the past.

    ===============================================================

    Print this post out, since you won't have an access to it, at some point.

    1. Open HijackThis.

    2. Close all windows, except for HijackThis.

    3. Put checkmarks next to the following HijackThis entries:

    - O2 - BHO: Adobe PDF Reader Link Helper - {06849E9F-C8D7-4D59-B87D-784B7D6BE0B3} - C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\ActiveX\AcroIEHelper.dll (file missing)

    4. You should also checkmark following entries (these are unnecessary startups; no actual programs will be removed):

    - O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Pinger] c:\toshiba\ivp\ism\pinger.exe /run
    - O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [lxcgmon.exe] "C:\Program Files\Lexmark 2300 Series\lxcgmon.exe "

    5. Click on Fix checked button.

    6. Restart computer.

    7. Post new HijackThis log.

    During boot, after the desktop loads there is a pop up window about Mcafee, but I don't see any Mcafee products in add/remove programs;

    mcafee privacy service

    an application component is missing. please reinstall mcafee privacy service.

    You mentioned that Spybot is a tool of the past, is it not recommended for use any longer? If not, what tools do you recommend?

    Here is the new hijackthis log;

    If you don't use any of McAfee applications anymore...
    Re-run HJT and checkmark:
    - O2 - BHO: McBrwHelper Class - {227B8AA8-DAF2-4892-BD1D-73F568BCB24E} - c:\program files\mcafee.com\mps\mcbrhlpr.dll

    Said that.....

    The machine is doing a lot better now than when I received it. Other than being memory constrained, it seems to be good as new to me. I'm going to return it to the owner in the next couple days.

    Thanks very much for the help with this. Hopefully I can convince them to keep it clean going forward.
