I'm considering buying a three month old laptop the seller claims came with Windows 7 but no backup discs.

What should I look for to identify if the OS is an actual retail?

Orb > Control Panel > System or Orb > right click on Computer > Properties should give you all the info you require.

    The System screen indicates:

    Windows Edition-----------------------

    Windows 7 Ultimate
Copyright 2009 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.

    In addition,

    Windows is activated
Product ID: XXX-OEM-XXXXXXX-XXXX (Xs substitued for numbers)

Does this indicate the OS is an actual retail?

I believe so - OEM being the key here.

I cannot tell you what you would see if it was the RC1 - the beta has surely expired by now, as I no longer have it loaded of course.

If you run winver(Run-->winver) command you could also see the build version of windows(build 7600 being the rtm)

Put SLmgr.vbs -dlv in the run command box. It will pull up a small screen with a lot of infomration in it. If you see anything that says an expiration date, or XXX days left, you have the RC version and better get yourself a real OS CD.
