    Thanks Frank,

I still think it's a hardware issue but Matt is of a differing opinion (which is not to be dismissed lightly). Keep us informed and good luck.

I'm reminded of an old phrase: "By George, I think we've got it!" :D

For starters, see this screenshot: http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/phot...?authkey=Gv1sRgCLjbio65oMbZfA&feat=directlink

Does that look like a vast lot of devices? By comparison, mine looks bare.

Bottom line: After some quick work, the ergonomic keyboard is working again, and it has continued to do so after three reboots.

Here's what did the job. I had my friend open Device Manager, open all the peripheral input devices, grab a screenshot of it and e-mail it to me. Needless to say, I was amazed at the number of devices! With the knowledge that this next operation might fail and we might have to muddle through reinstalling an item or two, I then guided him through the uninstallation of the two Logitech HID devices and the two HID keyboard devices, on the guess that these might be spurious entries. I then had him reboot the machine.

To our surprise and delight, the ergonomic keyboard came up working! Not taking this good fortune at face value, we rebooted the machine twice more before believing our good luck in fixing the problem. And at no cost other than time and effort.

Here's my friend's top-of-the-head summary of how he got into trouble in the first place: "Everything was working fine until I added some peripherals, such as a Logitech Game Pad and Wacom 'Bamboo' Stylus Tablet, and then moving a Microsoft Wireless Optical Mouse a few times between my two PCs. The ergonomic keyboard worked only intermittently after installing the Bamboo, and after I installed a new Logitech wired optical mouse the PC wouldn't recognize the ergonomic keyboard at all. It did still recognize a generic keyboard from another PC, but I couldn't use it because of my wrist problems. "

So it looks like Windows simply got its shoestrings in a knot over the slew of input peripherals that had been added and removed, and what was needed was a bit of housecleaning. In short, he's back in normal operation again.

My thanks again to everyone for their advice and suggestions. We could have come to grief and spent a lot more time and money without them. :)

I'll now mark this "Resolved. "

    Good investigation and report, thanks.

Some past experience Wildfire, if it is not standard/ordinary keyboard I check for a software cause (been there, done that :D).
