I was watching a tv show on my laptop when it all of a sudden crashed. Now when my laptop reboots it just gets stuck on the loading bar.

I've tried safemode and every other mode possible but it wont load. When loading with safe mode it gets stuck at crcdisc.sys.

I download the Windows Vista recovery cd and it isn't able to fix whatever the problem is. I tried system restore as well and it wont work either. I have absolutely no idea on how to fix this right now.

    Turn off the computer
Remove all power (power cord and battery for laptops)
Hold the ON button in for 30secs (dispersing internal voltage)
Put the power cord back in

Turn on and press the F8 key
Select Safe Mode with Command Prompt
Allow Windows to boot to the command prompt
type in chkdsk /r and press enter
    Allow CheckDisk to finish checking/Repairing
    Type Exit to restart

Does Normal Mode now work? :)

    Oh, just reading now
When you run System Restore you are best to run it in Safe Mode (press F8 key on system startup)

You may want to try that and then reply back
If you still have issues we may need to use a boot disc to either Repair Windows or remove the offending (likely MS update) issue you are having
Note: It is always best to have all MS Updates and Service Packs up to date.
Vista is up to Service Pack 2 now

Safemode doesnt work. It gets stuck at crcdisc.sys when trying to go to safe mode.

Also I tried the Vista Recovery CD, it wasnt able to fix the issue.

Ideally you could do a Repair of Windows using your Windows Vista Setup disc.
But since you have downloaded the free Windows Vista Recovery ISO, I suspect you may not have one?

There is also another option in the "System Recovery Options" and that is "Startup Repair "
Following This Guide please try that option and let me know if it worked. (Although I'm not positive if your original Vista disc is still required here as well)

Do you have any data on the system? If so then you may need to download a free Linux BootCD to back it up (to CD or DVD or external drive)
I recommend free KNOPPIX , once there just click on the large Download box, select a mirror closest to you and download it.
Burn the ISO to disc (I use Free ImgBurn for this) and then boot from it.

Ideally if you can get your Vista Setup disc (possibly ordered from your manufacturer support website) that would be ideal, as then you could do a Repair of Windows

Well without a Windows disc it is difficult. Since you will need a Windows install disc anyway!
I feel you should try to back up any User data before doing anything else.

Also does your system come with a Recovery Partition?
These recovery partitions are shown during the starting sequence of your computer. By displaying a Function key that needs to be pressed.
Note: This is not System Setup screen which gets you into the computer's bios settings and harddrive setup area.

Rename the following files to old, by adding OLD to the Filename
    ie pcmcia.sys becomes pcmcia.sysOLD

Here are some more options: (please try starting up after each one)
    • Rename crcdisk.sys system32\drivers\crcdisk.old
    • Copy all files in directory windows\system32\config\RegBack
to the directory one level higher windows\system32\config
    • Disable AHCI on the SATA drive in Bios Setup
    • Remove all but 1 Ram card
    • Replace Hard Drive SATA cable, and or disconnect all other drives (including DVD Drive)
    • Purchase a new Hard Drive, or run a Hard Drive diagnostics test on your present one

Please let me know if any of the above resolved your issue.

    Good news :)

Obviously the Hard Drive and data cable are both ok

I'm happy with the complete thread anyway, as I may use it for reference in future.

You can mark this thread as solved (even though you have updated to Windows 7)
The fix was obviously backup format and install Windows (although another version  )

Good luck with Windows 7 this time :)
