I have deleted footnotes in a .doc using the recommended procedure of highlighting the note number in the text then pressing Del. When I did this in the past, the footnote would be deleted and the following footnotes re-numbered. This is not happening now. The number is deleted from the text but the footnote remains and there is no re-numbering.

When you look at the Footnote options like "Numbering" what do you have it set to and have you tried different settings?

The settings are the same as I have used all the time.

And when you change them - does it help?

I only have this problem with footnotes and endnotes that were installed months and years ago. I can install and then delete notes now. The note is deleted from the note pane and the following numbers adjusted. The note number in the text is deleted when I press the Del in both cases but nothing happens in the note pane for the old notes.

I have found that this footnote delete and re-numbering problem with old footnotes does not occur with another old .doc I noticed on loading the problem file recently that a message containing the world 'corrupt' flashed up. I have not been able to get that message again. It is quite clear that the problem file has been corrupted in some way.

I have now re-installed Office 2000. That has made no difference. I have tried deleting old footnotes in the text of the problem .doc The number is deleted from the text but the footnote remains. In the print mode, the footnote is printed at the bottom of the page even though there is no reference number in the text.

I agree with the corruption problem. If you don't have a backup of the file you'll probably either have to live with problem or re-type the doc.

The recent backups to the document have the same problem while the old backups bear little relation to the current one due to edits. There can be no question of producing a new version as its is 1300 pages long. It looks as though I will have to live with the numbering of the footnotes and endnotes having gaps. Deleting footnotes is now cumbersome.
I did rename normal.dot at one stage so that Word created a new one. That did not solve the problem so it appears the corruption is not in normal.dot. I have also re-installed Word 2000 without solving the problem that this particular .doc is corrupted.
