XP just won't save settings. Some settings will save for a while but eventually they change or or go back to default. Is there some tricks that that I don't know?
    Quirkiest os yet.

A couple things you can try:

    1.) Run: regedt32

    Navigate to:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Program Manager\Restrictions

Be sure the value of NoSaveSettings is 0.

2.) As far as explorer goes, this seems to be a perennial problem with XP.

By default, as I understand it, XP only saves the settings for 400 windows before the slots are filled. That includes windows from folders that don't even exist any longer.

The solution is to delete these reg keys periodically:

    HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam\BagMRU\
    and
    HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam\Bags\

A complementary solution is to increase the number of slots. Do this by navigating to:

    HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam\

and creating a new DWORD value named "BagMRU Size" and setting it to a size of your choosing. Be sure all explorer windows are closed before applying this change, and choose a reasonable number, like 1024 or 2048.
You will not need to restart for this to take effect.

It is probably best to do both of these things at the same time and start with a clean slate. Your windows will have to be reset, but they will stay that way a lot longer.
