    Old Dell Diminision2400 running XP
    2.5GH, 72 memory.

Tried lots of cleanup utilities, no help.
It uses Diskkeeper for defragging but selecting a drive to defrag shows an error
in Microsoft Management Console (MMC) as "Snap-in" not found.

Question: is there a standard set of snap-ins available that can be downloaded?
A search of google and here does not reveal anything usefull.

    thanks,
    savagcl

You could uninstall Diskkeeper (so as not to have any corruptions)
And confirm Antivirus has been updated and a full scan completed
Then uninstall your Antivirus or any other live protecting 3rd party programs.
And then Start > Run > sfc /scannow
You may need your Windows disc during the scan

Once Windows is confirmed all intact and working, if you still have any issues you could run a Windows Repair
Note: A Windows Repair will not lose any of your data:

Running Windows XP with 72MB memory will always be SLOOOOWWWW.

There's nothing you can do to speed it up, except adding memory!

I've had Windows XP running on 128Meg of Ram, but this was a real cutdown version of Windows, with generally most things removed, not just disabled.

If you are running 128 of Ram (an approx 64Meg shared Video memory?) then this won't even run Windows XP (in my view) Let alone XP SP3, plus Antivirus etc.

XP SP3 (now) requires minimum 512Meg of Ram (I say with SP3, by the way)
Generally many users use 2Gig in XP these days, except your system states 2 Ram slots at 512Meg maximum in each slot (it also states 2Gig maximum overall memory, not sure how Dell arrive at that though, since according to the specs you can only have 2x512meg of ram, making 1Gig only??)

Anyway, are we to assume that "72" is some typo mistake or something?
You can confirm how much ram you have by clicking Start > Run > sysdm.cpl >ok
And then viewing how much RAM is listed in there.

My mistake, its 768 meg of memory. Sorry!

I added 512 of memory resulting in a very minimal of speed increase.

I have run CCleaner, ATF, TFC, Disk Cleaner, and Eusing Free
Reg Cleaner then RKill and Malwarebytes (quick and full scan.
All with no visible increase in speed.

Only error condition is the MMC missing "Snap-in" that popped-up
when i ran Diskkeeper (which i have now disabled).

    ????
    Thanks for the replies,
    savagcl

I use Diskeeper Lite which is a free version (7?) of some years ago. It works fine for manual scans but all automated functions are disabled. That doesn't bother me ... ... since I would have disabled them. Anyway, after installing SP3, i had those popups but simply told it to ignore permanently. Manual scans work fine and I even reinstalled it when reinstalling the complete system with SP3 slipstreamed.

About a slow system, I have noticed that my system has become slower. Not in terms of time to start up or close down but my Office applications take MUCH longer to open and load a document. I have a feeling that recent updates are to blame.

    Christer,

Hi, Long time, glad your still around.

Yes, start-up/shutdown is slow as molasses and the apps
take even longer, like click on MSWord and take a coffee break.
There is very little in the way of apps on the system, just the standard sets. I think the couple (retired) only use it fo e-mails and keeping jpgs mostly.

Will get rid of diskkeeper and see if there is a difference.
Since all hardware devices are showing good, I might just
reinstall but only as a last resort.

    thanks,
    savagcl
