There used to be a small utility program, particularly for laptops, that once installed, hid somewhere in the OS or the ROM; I really don't remember. I do remember that it was not erased by formating the hard drive.

It recorded your email address and if the computer was ever used to send email with another return address, (ie: it had been stolen and was being used) it would send you a message to your email address with the new return address noted.

I seem to remember that it was called "Phone Home" but I can't find it anymore. Does anybody know what I'm talking about?

Although it's name does not ring a bell I have found a program that does the same thing called LocatePC. I'm not sure about the company as they have not responded to an email, but if anyone is interested, the program does seem to exist.
