Are any of you, that are using the Avast (free version 5.x), experiencing probems with your computer crashing?
Mine has crashed 7 times since 1/24/2010, which was around the time I download their new version.
My system is free of any bugs as I performed full Malware, Superspyware and even a full scan from Avast.
In windows I show 7 files of minidump files, which I guess they can show you how/why/when your system crashed. Not sure if this is true but putting it out on the table for discussion.
Thanks for any and all suggestions.

I have contacted Avast support with this problem and have forwarded the zip file along with the full file for them to review.
I didn't have this problem with their older version 4.xx only with their new free updated version of 5.0x. When I get their response I will share it with you and BBS.
In the meantime I uninstalled Avast AV and downloaded Antivar AV just to see if error occurs here.

It looks like they are experiencing various problems with the new release as did Win 7.

The best advice is to wait awhile before rushing out to buy/install anything new until the program has been thoroughly checked out. Here is what the Avast Support response was to my issue.

"Thanks to all avast! users, we can receive a lot of information helping us to fix these problems - within ten days since the original release date, software development team was able of creating seventeen builds of avast! 5 fixing reported bugs. Hopefully in a few months, avast! 5 will be even better then its predecessor avast! 4.8 (after seven years of development...). "

Free avg, avira = many crashes
free avast = no crashes, no viruses, no trojans, no troUble except popup selling paid-for version

Just got this from Avast Tech Support:

This ticket was now assigned to our second-level technical support department. They will try to simulate the problem and find the solution. If they need some specific informations, they will contact you again. Please keep on mind that the process may take some time (one week approximately, usually less), so please be patient.

In the meantime I uninstalled Avast 5.0.377 Free and made sure no bits were lingering around and did a new install which updated to 5.0.396 and seems to be running ok. Time will tell and will post their findings when I hear from them.
    Have a great week-end!

I just wanted to say that since you are now running Free Avira Antivirus, of which I use and recommended. Have you actually done a full update and scan?
It would be interesting to hear how free Avira locates and remove malwares that others may have missed (I don't expect a response from this - strangely)

I agree that AVG has always been a bit so so. And therefore never recommended it. Seen too many network issues caused by just AVG being installed on a corrupted system.

I don't intend of re-directing this thread to some type of personal choice war between Antivirus softwares. But why not just stick to Free Avira? I have, and I've serviced I'd say a few thousand User malware issues online ;)
I do see Avast being promoted a lot here (and it is my second choice of best Free Antivirus anyway) But I wonder if all the hype on getting a revision fixed up is worth it in the first place, ie We are not the developer.

    FYI:

Free Avira Antivirus: Direct 32Bit link >> http://dlce.antivir.com/package/wks_avira/win32/en/pecl/avira_antivir_personal_en.exe
Restrictions of AntiVir on 64 bit Windows >> http://www.avira.com/en/support/kbdetails.php?id=231
All language versions from Avira Download Servers >> http://www.free-av.com/en/download/download_servers.php
Remove Free Avira nag screen >> http://www.elitekiller.com/files/disable_antivir_nag.htm

By the way I have no link or association with Avira (or any program, paid or free)
I only go with what I feel is best at the moment (in my view Free Avira since at least a year ago until now)

    My thoughts :)

I went back and installed Avast v. 5.0.396 and no problems with the update. I think Avast had driver trouble when they released new version and the fix showed a number of driver updates. So that may be what was causing BSOD on my computer.

Still waiting to hear from their tech support on the dump files I sent to them last week.

Both Avira and Avast are great (Free) AV programs and I have done a full scan with both of them with no problems. It all comes down to what floats your boat!

I think Avast support will like say:
    Uninstall it
    Run the removal tool: http://public.avast.com/~forejt/aswClear.exe
    Restart
    Install the latest version again

But if there is an issue with the current release, then they may be still working on it.

    EDIT
From what I can see, there may be some Windows network drivers causing the conflict
One member stated he made Avast load before the network loaded and all was ok
Another stated that he downgraded his network driver and then all was ok

So if you have any further issues maybe have a look into that ;)
