    [Resolved] Suspect Malware - Can't Connect To Internet Via Browser

    I'm helping a friend who apparently has picked up something bad. AVG has identified and quarantined this twice: "tfwhmf\jseusysguard.exe ".

    We can't connect to the internet - broadband - via a browser, either IE or Google Chrome. We tried three different restore points with no luck. I was able to update AVG but not Belarc Advisor. We can connect through Team Viewer and I can control his computer. I ran Supreantispyware and Malwarebytes but still no connection via browser.

    System Specs:

    Dell E521, Windows XP Media Center Service Pack 2, AMD Athlon 64 - 2.0 GHz.
    155GB Hard Drive - 137GB Free, 1GB Memory.

    XP Service Pack 3 wants to be installed but I decided to hold on that since the computer apparently has a problem. Should I go ahead and install or hold off until we get the all clear?

    Here are the DDS logs. Thanks for any help.

    • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on the Software icon > add/remove programs.
    • Search in the list for all previous installed versions of Java. (J2SE Runtime Environment.... )
    • Select it and click Remove.
    • Then Download and install the newest version from here:
    • http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp

    Can you post up the MBA-M log please.

    ==

    Download HijackThis Executable from here. Save it to your desktop.
    Start HJT & press the "Do a system scan and save a log file" button. When the scan is finished a window will pop up giving you the option of where to save it. Save it to desktop where it is easy to access. Open the log file and then go to the format Tab and make sure that wordwrap is unchecked. Copy the entire contents of the file & paste it into the body of your post. DO NOT FIX ANYTHING YET. Most of what is there is necessary for the running of your system.

    ==

    Please Run the ESET Online Scanner and post the ScanLog with your post for assistance.
    • You will need to use Internet Explorer to complete this scan.
    • You will need to temporarily Disable your current Anti-virus program.
    • Be sure the option to Remove found threats is Un-checked at this time (we may have it clean what it finds at a later time), and the option to Scan unwanted applications is Checked.
    • When you have completed that scan, a scanlog ought to have been created and located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt. Please post that log for us as directed below.

    Crunchie,

    Below are the Malwarebytes and HJT logs. The next item on your instructions is to run the online ESET scanner. However, we still can't get on the internet with the problem computer. Any suggestions?

    And I thought I could trick you :).
    Can you download MBA-M rules from http://malwarebytes.gt500.org/ and load it onto the problem pc. Run MBA-M again and remove what is found. Post the log again please.

    ==

    Did you set the proxy in Internet Settings? If not, fix that in hijackthis as per the following;

    ===============

    Programs like SUPERAntiSpyware, may interfere with the following fix, so we need to temporarily disable it.
    • Right-click on the SUPERAntiSpyware icon in the system tray.
    • Choose View Control Center... "Preferences/options" button/tab.
    • On the General and Startup...tab, uncheck, "Start SUPERAntiSpyware when Windows starts"
    • click Close to exit.

    Don't forget to enable your SUPERAntiSpyware protection, when your computer is clean.

    ===============

    Scan with HijackThis and then place a check next to all the following, if present:

    F2 - REG:system.ini: UserInit=C:\WINDOWS\system32\userinit.exe,C:\WINDOWS\system32\wmsdkns.exe,

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {45A4902E-4479-4EAE-A186-8D0F7E4C78DE} - (no file)

    O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {9FB3908C-6565-4CB0-95F8-E9F85258723C} - (no file)

    O4 - Global Startup: Digital Line Detect.lnk = ?

    Now, close all instances of Internet Explorer and any other windows you have open except HiJackThis, click "Fix checked ".

    ===============

    Locate and delete the following item(s), if present. Make sure you are able to view system and hidden files/ folders:

    files...

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\wmsdkns.exe

    -

    Note that some of these file(s)/folder(s) may or may not be present. If present, and cannot be deleted because they're 'in use', try deleting them in Safe Mode by doing the following:
    • Restart your computer
    • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
    • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear.
    Select the first option to run Windows in Safe Mode hit enter.

    -

    Reboot.

    ===============

    After rebooting, rescan with hijackthis and post back a new log. Please let me know how your pc is now.

    Crunchie,

    I am easily tricked, but not this time. Still no internet connection. I will post the two logs below.

    Not sure I understand what is meant by "set the proxy in internet settings ". I did disable Superantispyware and run the HiJack This but apparently didn't do the trick. I deleted the items you told me to.

    I couldn't locate the "wmsdkns.exe" file - also tried "Safe Mode" as you suggested.

    Please download ComboFix by sUBs from HERE or HERE
    • You must download it to and run it from your Desktop
    • Physically disconnect from the internet.
    • Now STOP all your monitoring programs (Antivirus/Antispyware, Guards and Shields) as they could easily interfere with ComboFix.
    • Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
    • When finished, it will produce a log. Please save that log to post in your next reply along with a fresh HJT log
    • Re-enable all the programs that were disabled during the running of ComboFix..

    Note:
    Do not mouse-click combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

    Run Combofix ONCE only!!

    Crunchie,

    I have the Combofix and the latest HJT log below. Couple of issues I wanted to highlight.

    AVG Disable - I couldn't figure out how to "disable" AVG. I looked all through the user interface. I disabled the tray icon and thought that might do it but when I executed Combofix it said it detected AVG was running and to disable. I went ahead with the scan so I hope I didn't do wrong.

    "Set the proxy in Internet Settings" - You mentioned that in a previous post. Is that something I need to do? And if so, where do I look to do it?

    A lot of ppl have that problem with AVG I have noticed. Having not used AVG for quite some years, I am not sure how to disable it. Combofix appears to have run ok anyway and has removed some malware.

    ==

    Open Internet Exploder and click on the Tools Tab. Select Internet Options then go to connections > Lan settings and uncheck the Use a proxy....
    Apply the settings and ok out.

    ==

    See if you can get on-line now.

    Crunchie,

    We are back on the internet. You are amazing. I thank you and my friend also thanks you very much.

    I didn't have to do anything to the proxy setting as you suggested in your last post. When I opened IE (we had turned the machine off until we got your next instructions), instead of getting the "...can't connect..." screen, the normal home page came up. And we were able to access the internet. Now that I think back, I don't remember if I restarted the computer after we ran the Combofix - that may have been the key.

    Is there anything else I need to do now? If not, and I don't hear back from you for a while, I will mark this thread "Resolved ".

    That's good news :). I need you to do one more thing though before we mark this as resolved.

    Please use the Internet Explorer browser (or FireFox with IETab), and do an online scan with [color= "blue"]Kaspersky Online Scanner[/color]

    Note: If you have used this particular scanner before, you MAY HAVE TO UNINSTALL the program through Add/Remove Programs before downloading the new ActiveX component

    Click Yes, when prompted to install its ActiveX component.
    (Note.. for Internet [color= "#3333FF"]Explorer 7[/color] users: If at any time you have trouble with the "Accept" button of the license, click on the "Zoom" tool located at the bottom right of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license has been accepted, reset to 100%.)
    The program launches and downloads the latest definition files.
    • Once the files are downloaded click on Next
    • Click on Scan Settings and configure as follows:
      • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
        • [color= "#6666CC"]Extended[/color]
      • Scan Options:
        • [color= "#6666CC"]Scan Archives[/color]
        • [color= "#6666CC"]Scan Mail Bases[/color]
    • Click OK and, under select a target to scan, select My Computer
    When the scan is done, in the [color= "Navy"]Scan is completed [/color]window (below), any infection is displayed.
    There is no option to clean/disinfect, however, we need to analyze the information on the report.

    To obtain the report:
    Click on: Save Report As (above - red blinking arrow)
    Next, in the [color= "Navy"]Save as [/color]prompt, [color= "navy"]Save in[/color] area, select: Desktop
    In the [color= "navy"]File name[/color] area, use KScan, or something similar
    In [color= "navy"]Save as type[/color], click the drop arrow and select: Text file [*.txt]
    Then, click: Save
    Please post the [color= "Navy"]Kaspersky Online Scanner Report [/color]in your reply.

    Crunchie,

    The Kaspersky Online Scanner is currently unavailable. I assume it's undergoing maintenance/upgrade. There's no mention of when it will be available again.

    Crunchie,

    Thanks for the response. I took another look and got the same result I got before - then realized I was in Google Chrome. I went to your link in IE and found the on line scanner. Will get back with the scan results later today.

    Crunchie,

    The Kaspersky report is below. Doesn't appear to have much information but I'm sure you will tell me if I have done something wrong.

    By the way, I found out how to disable AVG 8 - Open user control panel and double click Resident Shield. (I will update to AVG 9 after all this is over.) It has an option to temporarily disable. Another example of using Google yourself before you ask the question.

    Thats good that you managed to disable AVG. You get another chance to do it now :).

    1. Please open Notepad
    • Click Start , then Run
    • Type notepad.exe in the Run Box.
    2. Now copy/paste the entire content of the codebox below into the Notepad window:
    Code:
    KillAll::

    File::
    C:\tjgevm.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\tjgevm.exe

    Note: the above code was created specifically for this user. If you are not this user, do NOT follow these directions as they could damage the workings of your system.

    3. Save the above as CFScript.txt

    4. Physically disconnect from the internet.

    5. Now STOP all your monitoring programs (Antivirus/Antispyware, Guards and Shields) as they could easily interfere with ComboFix.

    6. Then drag the CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe as depicted in the animation below. This will start ComboFix again.

    [IMG]

    7. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), please post the following reports/logs into your next replyafter you re-enable all the programs that were disabled during the running of ComboFix:
    • Combofix.txt
    • A new HijackThis log.
    Please take note:

    CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

    Crunchie,

    Below are the two logfiles. I know it's late for you. I just checked the website of a favorite watering hole of mine - Bojangles in Alice Springs - and it was late there.

    I assume I will hear from you regarding these last two logfiles.

    We will sort that out right now :).

    Let's get rid of Combofix now that we are finished with it.
    • Click START then RUN
    • Now copy/paste the following bolded text into the Run box and click OK:

      ComboFix /Uninstall in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the /, it needs to be there.

    • CF_cleanup.png

    ==

    Go to Start | Run and type msconfig and press enter.

    When msconfig opens, click the Launch System Restore Button.
    On the next page, click the System Restore Settings link on the left.

    Check the box labelled 'Turn off System restore'.

    Reboot. Go back in and Turn System Restore Back on. A new Restore Point will be created.

    Note that all previous restore points will be lost.

    ==

    Sorry, but Kaspersky again please.
