OK: I got a test disk of office 2007 with this computer when I bought it last year, but never installed it as I wanted to keep using Office 2000. (Mostly, I didn't want to spend the extra money for 2007, and Office 2000 did the few things I needed done quite nicely.)

Then I had an "unfortunate experience" in December which necessitated a wipe and re-install of WinXP Pro, and - at that time - I dummied out and installed the trial program. Either exhaustion, lack of attention or too much holiday cheer, I dunno, but there it sits in all it's glory.

So, every time I wanted to open a .DOC or an .XLS it, of course, wanted to have it's registration key inserted to start the trial period. No way.

After the holidays I decided to un-install 2007 adn re-install my 2000 disks and that's when the fun started.

Office 2000 would get about half-way thru and suddenly come up with a splash screen that it was unable to find ( ** ) and could not continue.

    (1) So I would write down what it could not find, go looking on the internet, find it, find where it should be, put it there, cancel the 2000 instalation and start again, only to have it not find something else.

Repeat (1) and insert new missing file.

    Repeat (1) and....

So I gave up on that and had a drink, then ran a Reg Cleaner to see if I could get rid of any keys Office 2007 had left behind and tried it again.

    [Repeat (1) and...]

Then (since I'd probably mucked up the registry beyond all recognition:rolleyes:) I really gave up, and restored the system to a point prior to my messing it about.

Now I'm using Open Office, which works, but it just isn't the same for me.

My question is what the heck is going on? The Office 2000 was perfectly happy prior the OS re-install. I'd no problems putting it in back when I got the computer and I don't understand why it won't go in once Office 2007 has been un-installed via the Control Panel add/remove.

I'd really, REALLY like to get 2000 back on this and working...

    Suggestions? (use little words...)

Couple specs of dust on the cd or cd drive could also cause unable to find error..

Have a feeling you'll have to nuke and pave the drive to get Office 2000 running again.

Try copying the Office 2k cd contents to a dir on the computer and run the setup from the comp, not the cd.

Ahhh.. Ummm... Nope. I tried the manual uninstall option (Thanks, Pete!) but it still does the same thing.

I also "discwashed" the CD and air-shot the drive to get the dust out (ain't it just feckin' AMAZIN how MUCH dust accumulates in a few months?) and tried it again, with the same results.

    God does not love me.

    Microsoft does not love me.

(And, after the amount of time I'm taking up on the computer, neither doth mine wife...)

I fear that Uncle Steve may have the only solution, but I hope for some other enlightenment as may come.... (Ommmm...)

I'll wait a few days before I "nuke" things.

BUT: Inna meantime.... is this a great resource, or what?

I can't thank you guys who guard the forums and offer your help sufficiently. It makes the difference to SO many between a dead box and getting things fixed correctly.

All I can say is... "Vielen Dankë "

    OK: Further info...

TonyT and I must have cross-posted as I didn't see his post until this afternoon, so I decided to try this before I went and did the manual uninstall of O/2007, but I keep getting an error message.

When trying to copy the folder "Office1 ", The first item to be copied there is "Office 1 CAB" and a few seconds into it I get the error:
I was using drag'ndrop method, copying each folder from the CD to a USB drive folder.

Tried it also copying to a folder directly on the hard drive with the same results.

    I'm rapidly getting frustrated.

    Suggestions?

I suspect that your CD is damaged .....

What does 'cyclic redundancy check error' mean?

I think you're right. I took it over this AM to a jeweler friend and we looked at it under polarized lite... many little damages show up that way and this one has a BUNCH of em. Well, it's 12 years old, so....

Now, I can copy everything BUT the "Office 1 CAB ". I assume that license activation would not be in that folder, so If I can get a friends "Office 1 CAB" to copy into the directory, would I then be good-to-go?

Of course, if this would invalidate my key (I don't really see why it would, but... it's MicroKooks) then I'm done for unless I get a legacy copy of 2000 from someone with the key.

You can legally borrow a cd etc...Just have to use your own key code.

As suspected, your cd is damaged. Try polishing it with a soft cloth and try to copy again, else grab that cab from another's cd. No violation in doing this. And once you get the foiles on the drive, burn a new cd. I've been using an office 2k cdr that's lasted since 2001, kept in a plastic slim case.

    OMG!

Pete, I had to use your "manually uninstall" link to get rid of 2007... 124 registry keys deleted and 4 hours of work.... but it got done.

So I got a copy of 2000 from my boss, copied it to a thumbdrive, installed it with my product key and I'm in business again.

Thanks to all for the time and tips!
