I installed a 500Gb WD SATA harddrive my on PC with XP system some time ago and I have used it successfully for a couple of months until I decided to run chkdsk when I got the result "Too many bad sectors ". I also ran WD's own disk check feature with similar results.
I recently installed Ubuntu Linux and, out of curiosity ran the Linux disk check which gave the results of :-
    Bad sectore - None
    Disk- Healthy
Any idea why this should be and if there is really is a problem is there any way in which I can quarantine the bad bits to enable a defrag to run?

I would trust WD's software. I wouldn't trust any check disk software, be it MS or Linux.

If WD's software says there's a problem with the drive, there is.

Now, bad sectors can usually be 'fixed', if they are not too numerous. It is not really fixing, but if you do a low-level format on the drive (using WD's software), it will mark the bad sectors as such, and use some spare capacity that all drives have available to 'reclaim' some (or all) of the space.

Great Arie, thanks for your help which pointed me in the right direction., I tried what you suggested but it still wouldn't work properly so I downloaded and run Easeus and managed to end up with a fully functional Hard drive!!
Just one minor glitch due to my ham handedness, In EASEUS I now have a working HD labelled as drive H: which shows along with my other 2 HDs C: and E:

But when I run "My Computer ", another drive, G: shows up with no space and file system RAW
I'm sure that it was my working my round Easus which caused the problem.
It's not really important but is it possible to delete it

I had never heard of Easus, but great it helped you in this case. If everything is working, I might be tempted to leave that G drive alone.

I wouldn't want to try deleting it before making sure it isn't in some way used by Easus...

    Hard disk letter

I think that your suggestion of leaving well alone is the right one. I think EASEUS is worth having a look at, I was quite impressed with EASEUS which is freeware and not too complicated for a dummy like me to get most of the HDD problem ironed out. Thanks for your help.
