    Hi folks,

    Windows Server 2008 64bit
    Mobo - Asus M4A78T-E
    CPU - AMD Phenom II X4 955
    Virtualization software - KVM

Windows Server 2008 is running on this Virtual Machine as client (VM). It is working except following 2 devices

    Audio
    USB Mass Storage

No sound. USB flash drive can't be detected. Please advise where can I download the respective drivers. TIA

AFAIK Window 7 and Windows Server 2008 share a common core so Win 7 drivers should work fine.

When installing an OS in a VM it is still necessary to install the chipset (mobo) drivers as you would for a normal clean install of the OS - the USB drivers would normally be included as defaults in the OS, but for your mobo may be included in the chipset drivers.

Hmmm... I'm not that sure. The OS is not interacting with the physical hardware, but rather with the emulated hardware (the VM).

Does the VM software supports USB? Then it should have the driver. As for sound, you'd need to get a driver for the sound card that the VM is emulating.

The virtualization software supports attaching USB device to VM (guest). All other guests (4) detect the USB drive except Windows Server 2008. Files can be download/opened on the drive and upload to it as well. No driver is required. I ran command line to attach the USB drive to guests.

On Windows Server 2008, manage device, there is a "!" on USB Mass Storage and Audio as well

When I created the guests (VM) with command line I have the sound tab option up. Other guests have sound except Windows Server 2008.

    Hi Airie,

    Thanks for your advice.

Audio and USB Mass Storage drivers of 64 bit Window 7 can't work on 64 bit Windows Server 2008 which is the result of my test. Contacted Technical support of Asus they already knew 64 bit Windows Server 2008 can't work properly on Mobo M4A78T-E which is NOT designed for Server. They also suggested me to try the audio driver of 64 bit Windows 7. They were not sure. For USB mass storage they have no solution.

OK. I'll stop here unless I found a solution. Sound is NOT important to server. USB mass storage is. However I can use DVD writer instead if the burning software works on 64bit Windows Server 2008. Or I can send the data from Windows Server 2008 to the host via RDP on Windows and TSClient on Fedora. There are several solution on remote access/admin.

Anyway lot of thanks for helping me.

I'm not sure what your host OS is, but vmware 7 workstation supports not only sound & USB, but also aero... so you may want to try some other VM software.

Yes, I realize vmware isn't free...

There's also Sun's VirtualBox, but I'm not sure of it's capabilities.

    Hi Aries,

    Thanks for your advice.

Vmware has free version I tested it before. I didn't try sound and attaching device. Actually those function are not much useful, especially sound. To USB mass storage there are plenty of solution getting around it.

I tested it before also without test on sound and USB

Because of Windows I run KVM/vmware/VirtualBox/Xen etc. Otherwise I'll run VServer/OpenVZ they have kernel sharing. Therefore the space occupied by VM is relatively small and fast in operation. I build headless server remotely administrated on workstation either on Intranet or on Internet via ssh. I don't need GUI except on Windows. RDP and TSclient/etc. are solution on remote administration of Windows.
