Which one is best ( for you ) depends on many things.

    The software itself.

The machine and other software on it.

    Personal perferences.

Such as. Norton Internet Security ( AV & Firewall ) works fine for me. For others it is not so nice.

Some free ones are fine. Other are not so fine.

Some purchased ones are as bad as some free ones.

But some things that I would look for.

Is it capable of checking the boot sector and some of the main system files at startup ? This may bepend on the OS whether this can be done or not. ME would not allow it for me.

Does it have the capability to check e-mail both in and out ? Very important today. Try ot catch the bug BEFORE it gets to the machine.

Does it have a good update provisions ? Another important item now.

And what myself and other likes ( or works well for us ) you may not like or it may not even work well on your system.

Disk space and resource usage should be the least of thing to consider. Unless you are realy cramped for space.

Does it do the job that it is supposed to should be the main concern.

For me NIS fills the bill nicely.

But I will say this. Norton can be a B**** if it does not install properly the FIRST time. That I will vouch for.

You’ll get 101 different opinions as to which scanner is the best and what features you should be looking for - for example, BB advocates ingress/egress POP3 scanning whilst I consider this to be a complete waste of resources - all which will have some merit.

The established and well-known products (such as NAV, KAV, NOD32, AVG and Trend) tend, IMO, to perform equally(ish) well so it doesn’t really matter too much which one you choose - but beware of McAfee as it appears to have an nasty effect on quite a few systems! Also, the choice of product is, I think, of secondary importance to the implementation of good practices (regularly updating whichever product you choose, not opening unexpected attachments (even if a scan shows them to be clean), applying security patches promptly, only downloading files from reliable sources, etc, etc, etc).

Have a gander at this thread too.
