I am running Windows 2000 Server and after running for about 3-4 days I get a warning in event log that "The driver has disabled the write cache on device \device\harddiskx\DR0" and thereafter I get a long series of errors reading, in short, Unable to read the device performance counters... and within hours the server crashes. The x stands for one of the harddrives and which harddrive it is varies. (I have four on the machine.) I have turned on disk write caching and turned it off and on in case it was stuck but it makes no difference. What is going on and what do I do?

Wild guess is that either the mobo or one of the drives is dieing. Have you run tests on the drives using the software for the makers web site?

This has been going on for some time and I have tested all the drives and they are all good. I have replaced two of them and nothing made a difference.

Please describe "crashes." Does it do a BSOD error that can be Googled?

This is a very complex server which takes three days to build and more for the hardware. I need to find the error. For whatever reason the server never goes down in front of me so I don't know for sure that it is blue screening. When I come back to it, it has rebooted and is at the login screen. I have googled the error messages and it doesn't give me anything. There are other errors but they aren't consistent other than the "driver disables the write cache" message on the error in event viewer. The disabling happens on different drives on different times so I am inclined to think it isn't the motherboard. I have enabled and unenabled the write cache on the drives, thinking it might be hung but that hasn't made a difference. I'm kind of at wit's end.
