I installed Nero 9 yesterday on my laptop and PC. OS Wlndows XP.

Since then I get the error message when I try to open a photo in Outlook, or open a photo on my Desktop: "Windows cannot open this file... To open this file, Windows need to know what program created it.... "

I took a screenshot, but is unable to load it to Photobucket. I would like to disable this Nero function. Could someone please assist?

Have you tried right clicking on the image fils > Open With and selecting your preferred viewer/editor from the list presented?

    Yes, I have tried.

Windows Picture and Fax Viewer as well as Paint cannot open it. It can be opened by Picasa Photo Viewer and Photoshop.

I am concerned that the recipients might not be able to open it and I prefer mine to be initially opened by Windows Picture Viewer.

Is it possible to attach a screenshot, without going the photobucket route?

    Thanks
    Albie

Sure - Contributing Members can post screenshots - the workaround is to post on a photohosting site.

    What's the problem with Photobucket?

What is the file extension of the image?

I have been uploading numerous photos in the past, but it looks as if it uploads- go to 100%, but does not want to open it.

    Type of file: NeroPhotoSnapViewer.Files9.psd
    Opens with: Unknown application

I looked at two photos that I saved on my desktop- the one I exported from Picasa, the other one from Photoshop- both give the same type of file.

I also posted on the Nero official site- no responses yet, but I managed to attach a screenshot

According to your screenshot of the Windows dialogue - attached below, the file is a .jpg, not a .psd.

What happens if you click on 'Select a program from the list' - do you get the choice of Windows Picture & Fax Viewer?

It seems to me that Nero 9, with which I am not familiar as I use Nero 7 - works fine on Windows 7, has messed up your file associations. The problem with Nero is that it sets itself as default for a number of image related tasks. Hence I only install the Burning Rom which is all I need.

If 'Select a Program from a list' does not work try making the file association another way .....

Windows Explorer > Tools > Folder Options > File Types ....

What is the association for .jpg, .jpeg? Click on the extension - Opens with?

I think you have fixed it!!

Yes, the initial one would have been jpeg, because that is what I normally use. I then tried Photoshop and replaced the files on the desktop- Sorry!

    Yes
I just exported another picture- this time a "true" jpeg. The list gave me the choice of Windows Picture & Fax Viewer and I could open the photo.

Basically, this is what I need as well- how will I go about uninstalling all these other features? (especially Nero Show Time, which I saw caused the problem.

JPEG gave Microsoft Office Picture Manager, but I think this could be as a result of my fiddling. Many others like MPEG, AAC Audio, MP3, etc gave me Nero Show time.

A last question- if I open Nero in Program Files, there are a number of files. Which ones should I keep? I want to use Nero for burning only.

    Here they are:!
Burning ROM; Burn Rights; Cover Designer; DiscSpeed; Drive Speed; Express; Info Tool; Live; Photosnap;Recode;Resque agent; Show Time; Sound trax; StartSmart; Vision; WaveEditor; DiscCopy9.Gadget; Templates.

Thanks a lot. Will soon mark it resolved

Checking my installation of 7 - I would imagine 9 has similar facilities ......

Start > All Programs > Nero > Nero Product Setup I have those parts of Nero shown in the screenshot loaded - some may be default and not an option. (I remember installing NeroRecode as I have used it in the past)

If you click on Setup in the first screen shot this should lead to the Custom Setup dialogue where you can select/deselect components.

I could not find a custom Setup dialogue, so I went to programme files and deleted some and kept what you have. Everything seems to work.

Need to test if Nero can actually write a disc!!

    Thanks so much

Not best practice :) However if the bits you want work, fine although there will be remnants of those deleted parts around elsewhere.

Maybe there was an option in Add/Remove Programs - Nero 9 - Change/Remove which would have led you to the component uninstall feature.

If you do run into problems probably the best approach is to uninstall Nero 9 and then make a Custon install, an option I would feel sure is on offer at that stage.
