I had a few problems recently with my CD drive, i.e. it disappeared. as mysteriously as that happened it re-appeared however now it will only play DVDs. I've tried several cds and none will play, all I hear is a bit of clicking. It also freezes my windows media player. Can anyone please help?

    Cozzielex,

Have you tried to uninstall the device and then reboot and let windows find it ?

No, I was a bit afraid to do this. Should I uninstall it at device manager? Ok I tried that and the drive re-appeared but it's still the same...wont have anything to do with anything except DVDs

From memory, it has been mentioned here before that CD/DVD drives have different read/write heads for CD as opposed to DVD. Me, I would take the drive out and connect it into another computer and see if it works there.

Thanks Mattman, I don't have the knowledge to do that, or a spare computer! I guess I'll have to take it back to the vendor.

The past history of this drive (in other threads) is far from good - I suspect it is faulty - a visit to the cowboy may be your only recourse :)

I ma still trying to resolve this problem, here are the steps I have so far taken:-
Here are the steps I have so far taken (without success)
    1. I have updated the version firmware (from 1.01 to 1.02). The change is shown in device manager, but when I checked MyComputer>Manage>Storage>Libraries>Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-218L it still shows the old version. Anyway the update makes no difference.
    2. I checked in the registry HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} and there are NO references to upper or lower filters.
    3. I tried restoring the cd drive (CDgone.zip)
    4. I tried using a cd-fix (www.dougknox.com)
    5. Using ERUNT I tried to restore back the registry to a time when it was working ok.
    Please Help!

Yes it's working in that it plays everything, but when I put in a blank cd-r or dvd-r and try to access the disk I get an error message saying D:/ is not accessible. Incorrect function. If I click porperties it shows the disk if full (all blue)... they are brand new disks.
What is going on? I think I am junxed with cd drives?
Can you help Pete (or anyone else)
    Thanks

It's CD burning software - what software do you use for burning?

I dont have any yet. I was looking for a free utility (I see Roxio isnt, I downloaded it and it asked for my pin). For burning I thought I could use windows media player.
All i want really is to copy files to the cd. And surely if i open a blank cd it will be just that...blank. Surely I shouldnt get that inaccessible message should I?

XP has native burning software - for CD's only built into the OS .....

How do I use Windows XP's CD burning feature?
    No, you should not.

Go to Windows Explorer, right click on the CD drive > Properties > Recording.

Is 'Enable CD recording .... ' checked?

Pete, Ive right click the cd drive in explorer, then properties, and there are 3 tabs, General, Autoplay and Hardware. 'Recording' is not there.

    Pete,
Yours is a rare genius of which I am unworthy...it worked and all is now well (well, until the next catastrophe!)
    Thanks a bunch!
