    Hi
I have read the posting rules and hope i am following them,i have tried searching for a similar fault via other posts but i cant find any that cover my fault condition.
I am presently using windows XP , recently my computer just switched off the keyboard and stopped sending a signal to the monitor, the fans keep running but the green light on the front of the comp has gone out and the amber light is now on.
If i do a restart the comp goes through its initial checks ie: green light on front comes on ,green lights on dvd drives come on and go off again then the comp light goes amber and it just sits in this state ,no signal to the monitor,no power lights on the keyboard.
Could you please advice me on any probable causes and hopefully any fixes for this
    Thankyou:confused:

Do you mean comp or the monitor?
What about the hard drive light?

    Several possible causes ....

Either the PSU, hard drive or motherboard has died, hence the question re. the hard drive light.

I would certainly check out the hard drive with the disk manufacturer's disk diagnostic software - DOS version from a bootable CD .....

    Disk Diagnostic Software ....

Posting your computer specs including motherboard, CPU, video card, and the brand name and wattage of your power supply would be very helpful.

    How old is this computer?

The power LED on Dell computers will change to orange when there is a serious problem.

Taking the simplistic view - have you checked the keyboard/monitor connections on the rear of the computer?

It is not clear from your spec list if this is an OEM computer - Dell, HP, etc or a custom build. It would be helpful to know.

hi ,it is a custom built system of around 5 years old,i have taken the connections out and re inserted them and still no joy.
if it helps at all i tried inserting my flash drive into the motherboard usb port and it didnt light up as it normally would.
the mother board lights are on and the fan is running there just seems to be no power to the usb's .
could this be a virus or trojan that is shutting off this part of the board?

This is almost certainly a hardware problem and wil require some logical troubleshooting to try and isolate the component which is causing the problem. You may feel that some of the actions proposed exceed your stated Computer Experience and if you do not feel confident to carry them out please say so :)

Keyboard - please check if toggling the Num Lock key turns the Num Lock light on/off. It is quite possible for there to be no lights on the keyboard if the Num Lock is off. Also check the effect of toggling the Caps Lock key - any Caps Lock Light?

Monitor - When powering up the computer does the monitor light change colour - to Standby?

Power - From what you post there would seem to be a lack of power to various components, including the USB ports. It is impossible to say if this is due to a PSU or motherboard fault - is the PSU fan running?

Some basic checks for you to make ....

Power down the computer, and turn off at the wall socket, but leave the plug in. This ensures that the computer remains earthed. (Note to readers across the pond - the UK electrical system is 240v and a 3 pin plug/socket is used where one pin is earth).

Remove the side of the case and remove each of the power connections to the motherboard in turn and remake them. Take great care not to disturb connections to other components and try to keep some bare flech touching the case to earth you.

    Test and post back.

    Hi Have tried as suggested
    Keyboard -toggling has no effect

Monitor-no response(it normally turns itself on as the comp boots up,now there is no response ,if i manually turn it on then on screen msg "no signal please check cable ")

PSU- i have tried un plugging and re plugging all cables from PSU to components with no change.
hard drive /motherboard/graphics card/all light up fans all running

I didn't see any info on your power supply, normally you should see its specs when you open up your case. You've already checked the the connector so, I really don't think that is the problem. On a new just put it togather it might be. Ive had that happen to me once or twice. See if you can get a good power supply for a friend. Insure its the same power out put or greater.

Or see if some one you Know is willing to let you test your Graphic card out on there system. Be aware that they need a system with AGP. If it works then have your power supply tested, at lease most computer shops will bench tham for free (at lease they will here in the US).

Or disconnect all but your Boot drive and your dvd rom, if your system is running IDE make sure that the jumpers are set to master. Doing this will cut your power consumtion down and you might beable to boot up your system.

If you now can post then go into BIOS normaly you just hit delete a couple of time to enter BIOS. There you should see a hardware monitor some where.

Take a look at the numbers that are being posted i.e. +12, +5 and +3.3 remember that they should be within 5%, but some boards do have problem and they don't report the proper number. But if they are with in the 5% and temp seem to be alright. exit and let it boot in to windows.

Exit window and start to add your drive back into the system (one at a time) until your system starts to have problem. Note the drive or component that caused the problem. Now you can start over, disconnect every thing again i.e. Drive assuming it was a drive that caused the problem, connect it so that its all by its self and boot up again, go into BIOS and see if it see your drive if so then odds are its good and your power supply is to weak to handle all of the devices you have connected.

If you have a sound card installed remove it also.

Then again if thats to much work, pull the power supply have it tested and Replace it if need be. Im pretty sure its your power supply that has gone or is going bad. If you do need a new one get one with more wattage and that the specs are good.

You didn't mention what kind of work you do on your computer but the better the power supply the least amount of problem you'll have.
