ah, a conflict again between peteC and dakkatu -
one says i should go for the corsair cuz that's the most reliable maker.
the other says that the 550W are not a safe bet and should go for a ANTEC 650W

it seems like there is no need to involve HEC into the decision since i see a ANTEC of 650W in the options and we can all agree that the ANTEC is a better choise over a HEC and the difference in the price is about 7$, which isnt much at all.

so the question is probably between the 550W corsair or the 650W antec.
since both are reliable i think Antec is the better choise... and also a cheaper one.

dont u agree? dakattu, u said i should go for the corsair but considering my reasons i dont see why. can u give an explenation why corsair although my voltage requirements might be higher than 550W? i dont fully understand your recommendation....

If you are choosing between the HEC and the Antec, I would certainly choose the Antec, hands down. I think the Corsair would run your rig and it is the best quality power supply of the three choices.

However, if you are the least bit uncomfortable with the 550 and want a 650, then I see no reason why you should not choose the Antec. Just be sure with that company that you keep all sales receipts in case it tanks on you, because they aren't the easiest to deal with on a RMA.

However, they recently have begun to use better parts again, so that might be your best bet if you want the 650. That is my opinion.

BTW, I don't see any conflict here and don't want that read in to this response, I feel this is just an honest difference of opinion from our varied and different backgrounds and experiences in the field.

dakkatu - thanks again. also i never implies a personal conflict in this discussion. merely an opinion conflict.
the HEC is out of the question so im not getting it if im getting an option from the store.

im confused since u saidd, on one hand, that your choice is the Corsair but then u said "if u r uncomfortable go with the 650 antec" so the buttom line isnt clear - is the safest bet the antec or corsair? i need something to hold my system, make it stable, reboot easily and not fry up on me and i have a HD4870 and Q6600 in my rig.
between the 3 PSUs - the 550W CORSAIR, the 550W ANTEC and the 650W ANTEC - u say that i SHOULD look at the voltage if i am a bit worried by the 550W and that the safe bet will be the 650@ antec, but my friend says that the antec 550W comes from a better series and is more reliable and slightly cheaper than the corsair and THAT's why i should go with that one.

    *puzzled*

    Dennis L -
i see that both reviews of the PSUs are good but a PSU can be enough for one system while not enough for another so i dont know if one of these PSUs is better for MY rig than the other. maybe they were both great if i had a geforce 7900 back in 2007\2008 when the reviews came out but it's 2-3 years later, hardware power needs have changed and maybe these reviews and no longer relevant.

maybe im wrong since i dont know much about hardware but from all the descussion i know that the HEC is no good but still not sure if there is one PSU that is better than the others. i think i will end up gambling in the end.

p.s. - question - if i get a new PSU from the store but im getting it cuz i replaced an old one i bought from the same store and i do so within the time limit of the warranty - should my warranty reset for the new PSU? should i insist that i get a new warranty on the new PSU or maybe it isnt common to reset it if the new PSU is a replacement?

    1) The review(s) on the 2 PSU's tests their specs per power quality / delivery under load. If we accept the tests / results as valid, whether two years ago or two days ago, they continue to be valid ... both PSU's are rock solid.
You do not have "My System" info filled out, so all I know what your running ..
    cpu - Q6600
    gpu -4870
    Ram - 2GB
So I added 2x HDD/7200, 1x DVD Burner, 3 fans and set at 90% utilized. Sent it through eXtreme Power Supply Calculator Lite v2.5 and came up with 407watts. Both PSU's will work fine. Choose the one YOU feel comfortable with. We have provided suggestions, links, reviews, and 1st hand experience for a number of PSU's ... the final choice can only be made by yourself.

    2) When a part is replaced under warranty, the replacement part "inherits" the terms of the "Original part ". Example .. Part failed month 23 of a 24 month warranty. Replacement part has a "1 month" warranty. The seller has met his 24 month warranty requirement.

There's no need for confusion - dakkatu's post is crystal clear :)

Both the Corsair and the Antec are good PSU's.

If you want to gamble on 500W being enough when the calcs suggest it is marginal then go for the Corsair.

If you want to be sure and be within a safety zone go for the Antec 650W.

My (final) 2 cents worth on this - Antec 650W and sleep peacefully :)

Bottom line - it's your decision!

that was a good response, dennis. very fulfilling :) and your guess about my hardware is correct - 2 HDDs and 1 burner.

peteC - so u r saying the antec 650W is definitely better than the antec 550W? doesnt it matter that the newer model of the antec 550W is perhaps made better as a friend of mine suggests?

only question is - is the "Antec TruePower New Modular 550 550W Retail" as good and reliable as the other two? cuz it's cheaper and is available in the store (means it can be sent to me 10 days sooner than the other 2 PSUs) and if u r saying that all i need is about 407 watts than it should do fine.
u think it's good for me as well?

As all of us have been saying ... the final choice is yours.
Another consideration ... what is your next upgrade / system going to be?? If it will need more power than current, then choose the higher wattage unit. Reading in between the lines ... you want the 650 Watt. If true, go for it.

Dennis L - i dont think i will upgrade in the next year or so. maybe add more ram if i move from XP to win7 and OCing a lil bit. just a lil.

anyways , i think i will go for the 650W to have that leeway.

thanks a lot for all the help and research, guys. i appreciate your contribution a lot :)

have a great day and i'll see u when my mobo fries...
