I want to transfer my FF 3.5 passwords and bookmarks in my PC to a laptop. For various reasons, I don't want to transfer my whole profile, just passwords and bookmarks. Both computers are WIN XP.

The simplest way I can think of transferring my bookmarks is to copy the latest JSON file in the bookmarks backup subfolder in the profile folder in my PC onto a flash memory, stick this in a USB port of my laptop, then go to Bookmarks>Organize Bookmarks>Import and Backup>Restore>Choose File and then go to the JSON file in the flash memory. If anyone can see any problem with this procedure, please let me know. (I know that this will write over the bookmarks in the laptop.)

As for transferring passwords, I have no idea how how to transfer these, and would appreciate any help I can get.

I had to create a new profile when my original profile started giving me problems. I copied the bookmarks.html, and did, pretty much what you suggested, except that I selected to import HTML. I have, never, tried to work with the .json format. I think that it should work, but importing the .html has worked for long time.
As for the password, I am not sure what you would have. My old profile had a signons1(2 0r 3).txt. I copied the no.3 file, as well as key3.db (which may not be a necessity).
My latest profile does not have any .txt file, but rather a signons.sqlite file.

Westside, thanks. The reason I didn't want to use Import HTML was that as I understand it, the imported bookmarks would be added to the old bookmarks, rather than replacing them, which would lead to a lot of confusion. Am I right in this? Maybe I should manually delete all my old bookmarks on the laptop, then import HTML.

As for passwords, I just found a Firefox support page that says to copy both key.3db and signons.sqlite files to transfer passwords, so this is probably what I will do. (After backing up the old files that were on the laptop.)

    This is much better:

    On the old computer:

    - Bookmarks: Bookmarks (menu bar)> Organize Bookmarks> Import and Backup> Backup...> choose a location (USB stick)
    - Passwords: Install Password Exporter add-on (restart Firefox) then: Tools> Options> Security> Import/ Export Passwords> check obfuscate> Export Passwords> choose a location * (USB stick)

    On the new computer:

    - Bookmarks: Bookmarks (menu bar)> Organize Bookmarks> Import and Backup> Restore...> find your file (USB stick)
    - Passwords: Install Password Exporter add-on (restart Firefox) then: Tools> Options> Security> Import/ Export Passwords> Import Passwords> find you file (USB stick)

*For security reason it is best not to save this file on the computer but to a disconnected storage device only.

JCinvan, thanks. I'm going to install the Password Exporter extension soon, and I 'll let you know how it worked out.

JCinvan, just to thank you again. I used the Password Exporter extension, and it worked just fine.

I said the above. Doing this you would be given the opportunity to replace an existing file of the same type. But, what could be the problem importing the bookmarks. There would be precious little in a way of bookmarks in the existing laptop file. I don't understand what is the possible source of confusion, unless you had been using the laptop program for a while, and accumulated bookmarks.

Nevertheless importing the bookmarks from HTML doesn't work as well as backup/restore, as it imports to a different folder and have to be moved to the bookmark toolbar folder.
