I'd like comments (hopefully experienced based) on Windows Defender vs SuperAntiSpyware.

I think that maybe you should have posted this in the general security forum as this one has a restriction on who can reply.

    Moved....

It's going to be probably a matter of opinions, so this is IMHO...
Windows Defender runs in real mode, but since it's updated only once a month (with Windows updates) and I've never seen it catching anything, I don't use it.
IMO, antimalware tool, which is updated once a month, is worthless.

Superantispyware (along with another excellent program, Malwarebytes) doesn't run in real time (unless you have paid version), but you can update its definitions every day and run it as often, as you want.

    Thx Broni.
I have Superantispyware and Malwarebytes so I think I'll dump Win Def. The less MS the better. :D

I can't understand why MS Security Essentials hasn't been mentioned here. It has been my sole anti-malware for more than four months now, and weekly searches using a downloaded AntiMalwareBytes find that nothing has arrived.
It updates silently daily, and can do a thorough search, either scheduled or unscheduled.
    Much more effective than Defender.

Roger, are you saying you use both MS Security Essentials and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware?

No Chas. I have been a bit infected by some of the anti-MS paranoia you find on these forums, so from time to time I download another cleaner, and run a check to make sure that MSSE is doing it's job.
So far all the other cleaners, like Malwarebytes, have only found four tracking cookies, nothing threatening.

    Gotcha.
So inspite of the perceaved fear (out there) you are comfortable and satisfied w/ MS Security Essentials?

100% so far Chas. MSSE is the quietest security tool that I have tried, it sits there using no cpu cycles normally, 2248k of memory, updates itself unnoticed, and seems to be effective.
I do a weekly imaging just in case though!

I want to make sure, we distinguish antivirus programs (must have) and antispyware programs (optional; over last couple of years, they're almost "must have ").

MSE is primarily antivirus program, while Windows Defender and Super are antispyware programs.

In fact Broni, MSSE is anti-spyware, anti-virus, anti-malware, and anti-trojans, according to the available at MS.
I am aware of the differences, I link HERE to the MS Security info site, for anyone who may like to know more.

I have Windows Defender running & SUPERAntiSpyware as an on-demand scanner. Windows Defender has some good tools on it. It wasn't originally made by MS but by Giant. I would say that its scanner is no worse than Spybot S&D. It also scans downloads & is realtime (if you want). SAS is the better scanner however, it updates every 8 hours. I'm seriously considering buying the pro-version. In my experience it has less problems & less false positives than Malwarebytes MBAM (I have never had an f/p with SAS, I had too many with MBAM).

    From the MS Security site:

    About Microsoft Security Essentials

Microsoft Security Essentials provides real-time protection for your home PC that guards against viruses, spyware, and other malicious software.

Microsoft Security Essentials is a free* download from Microsoft that is simple to install, easy to use, and always kept up to date so you can be assured your PC is protected by the latest technology. It’s easy to tell if your PC is secure "” when you’re green, you’re good. It’s that simple.

Microsoft Security Essentials runs quietly and efficiently in the background so that you are free to use your Windows-based PC the way you want—without interruptions or long computer wait times.

Good info Roger. I knew nothing of this product until this thread showed up.
