Is it possible to install quicken on a usb drive? If not can all data be stored on a thumb so that it can be run on any machine with quicken installed?
    Thanks

I rather doubt it as it is not a standalone program and integrated with Windows when installed.
I can only speak for Quicken 2000 with which I copy the .qdf to my laptop or netbook for use when travelling without issue, so I would see no problem using a USB thumb drive (encrypted for safety)

Versions of Quicken are Not Backward Compatable

I believe that different year versions of Quicken may not be backwards compatible.

If you have a 2006 data base and go to a 2009 machine you may be asked to convert the data to 2009 format and then find out that it cannot be converted backwards.

I would check this out in the Quicken Forums.

Of course if you went to Quicken On Line that would eliminate that issue.

Coleman has a good point :)

Unfortunately Quicken 'died' in the UK some years ago - I run 2000 in XP mode in 7.

Some additional options from least expensive to the most are:

    1. go to Quicken On Line
    2. If some one is at home while you are aware then have that person turn on your
PC and have it set up for remote access so you can operate it from another PC from Timbuktu.
    3. Get a cheap note book and sync the data between the two.
    4. Get a home server and access the Quicken from your note book while on the road.

To answer the first part of your question I do believe there are Virtual Computers on USB drives that may support quicken as a stand alone as long as you can have access to a PC for the physical system. I would Google Virtual Computers.

I like the remote access idea.

Avoid commercial programs Like GoToMyPC. They provide slick interfaces and are easy to use.

In my judgment there is no point in paying for a service that you can provide you’re self with a little research and some effort.
