    Hi Steve,

Looks like you're missing some codecs, you could try downloading a pack from Free-Codecs and let us know how you get on (the XP Codec Pack looks promising).

Hi Steve. You can also try installing K lite Codec Pack from here. The K lite codec pack also enables you to play DVDs using Windows Media Player. Let us know how the videos play after installing the codecs.

installed the Klite pack now nothing happens except for an error. I'm worse off than when I started. Does anyone know how to uninstall WMP so I can re-instal and start over?

    Fix WMP

 I ran the fix WMP and now I'm back to where I started. The files play the sound only. The screen plays the visualizations, but not the actual video. The videos are good, because they all played before.

What type of file are you trying to play? Will it play .wmv??
Most of the time Media player needs two codec packs. Divx and K-Lite are the two I use. Media Player now will handle most video files.

Too Many codec packs really causes problems, so uinstall, uninstall, uninstall (I've been there) before adding anymore codec packs.

    Files are not corrupt

:confused:The files arer all good. They are .wmv's and .avi's. They all worked before. When I try to play them, the sound is there, but no picture. All I get on the screen is the visualizations. The suggestions for the Media player downloads tell me that they don't apply to my operating system. If I go to yhe Microsoft download site, it says I already have the player and I should check for updates. There are none of course. The videos play on other players. I want my Media player to work again. Thanks to all who have given input. Does anybody know how to uninstall media player and reinstall?

Give this a shot, click Start< All Programs< Accessories< Right click Command Prompt and select Run as Administrator. When the Command Prompt window opens type the following command and hit enter sfc /scannow. After SFC finishes, reboot the computer and then see if you can play the media files.

Tried the sfc /scannow, still the same. This also effects all the videos that I get in E-mails. I can't see anything but the visualizations. The sound is there, but no images.
