I may need to replace my C drive currently loaded with Vista, it's a long story, suffice it to say I messed up formatting it with 3 partitions and the C partition is just a little too small for my needs. There are two additional hard drives in this computer along with software and data files on each drive. Money is not really an issue for this project, I am more concerned with ease of transition and possibly reverting back to the existing system should some serious problem develop.

I am considering removing the existing boot drive leaving the OS and other software on it, in tact. Reinstall a new boot drive, instead of reinstalling Vista, upgrade to Win 7 full 64 bit version to take advantage of the existing 4 GB RAM.

If I do as stated above, will I have to uninstall literally all software on the other two drives and reinstall once Win 7 is running?

Any other ideas, suggestions, or painful experiences to share?

    Thanks!

You can certainly do what you suggest, and load 7, but you will have to remove and re-install all the programmes which write data to the 'C' drive on installation, or install registry keys.

From reading your post, you seem to misunderstand some basic concepts about your computer.

1- You could easily resize any partition on your drive (it's a lot faster if there is no data on it)
2- You could have an OS on everyone of your 3 drives (1st partition) and choose to boot from any one of the three.
3- If you do a clean install (of any OS) you will have to install the software you want to use, but You don't have to uninstall anything from another drive.

I could explain more about each step if you would like.

    Thanks for the responses everyone.

I am going to attempt resizing the partition and go from there. My first attempt failed as the adjacent partitions have data and software on them. I am going to copy everything on the adjacent partition to another drive, delete the adjacent partition, then attempt to Expand the C partition.

I'll repost after giving it a whirl.
