    OP has done this post #1
    The drive is not seen in BIOS, let alone by Windows.

    The other issues you mention are - other issues, symptomatic perhaps of the less than healthy state of the computer, but the CD drive is not seen in BIOS which is below the level of Windows.

    The bottom line - if the BIOS fails to recognise a device then Windows will not either.

    Missing DVD \ CD Fix for XP, Vista

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11*CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

    Apparently it seems that this is an age old fix for even XP systems. If you venture to the registry key above by doing the following steps:

    1. Click on the start menu.
    2. If this is a Vista or XP machine in the search box type in "regedit" without the quotation marks.
    3. Maximize the HKLM and then go ahead and browse until you reach this key.
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11*CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

    4. In the right panel you’ll see something along the lines of "UpperFilter" and "LowerFilter" you want to click on each "filter" key and hit delete. Click yes when it asks to confirm if you wish to delete the key.
    5. Restart Windows.
    6. Let me know if this works.

    Hi Pete,

    Im sorry to ask for your help again but does this mean anything??

    I have found something called an error log and amongst other things it says this--

    The device 'TOSHIBA DVD-ROM SD-R2212' (IDE\CdRomTOSHIBA_DVD-ROM_SD-R 2212________________1011____\3 259364b36313037373220202020202 020202020) disappeared from the system without first being prepared for removal

    Any ideas???

    My tuppence worth again :)

    I would say that error indicates when your drive failed.

    Regarding the 3Dongle showing up as a CD drive...

    As well as having a slot for MicroSD cards the dongle keeps drivers in a CDFS partition in the dongle itself. It's no suprise that Windows sees this partition as a CD Drive. It may be confusing but those drivers are handy when swapping the dongle to other systems (no need for Driver Disk, Internet access etc).

    Sorry to say my final conclusion stands - the drive or it's connection with the motherboard has failed.

    The best you can do is to locate a repair manual for the laptop (Google), access the CD drive and check the connections.
