Ho to all you harmonica players!

I have a Toshiba P200 laptop / Windows Vista Home Premium. One is supposed to stop or start mouse from the touchpad by pressing these two buttons in combination. It doesn't work though. Anyone with an idea as to how to overcome this? Help will be appreciated. Thanks!

A misunderstanding. It's not the mouse that FN/F9 affects or is supposed to affect as you know. So I'm trying to get the touchpad to work. The FN/F9 is supposed to either start it or stop it. These two keys are doing nothing. I was wondering what it is or why it is these are doing nothing any longer? Appreciate the feedback.

Thanks PeteC for the reply. I deleted the Synaptics device from the system and downloaded the latest driver. Still a no go. If you've another suggestion, I'm listening and will appreciate it. Thanks!

I have to ask the obvious question - you are pressing the Fn key first and while holding that down pressing the F9 key?

As I am sure that you are doing this the implications are ....

One of the keys is not making contact, or

    The touchpad has died.

You might check in Control Panel > Mouse - which will include the Synaptics settings - for a check box to enable/disable the touchpad.

Yo PeteC - I am pressing the FN key first while holding down the F9 key - I've tried pressing one first then the other - and then of course holding both down at the same time.
I had this problem before - when I did a format and a reinstall, it worked again - for a while. So this is telling me it's software related, but where and how is an inch or two over my head.

For a while maybe being the operative phrase - you've reloaded the software which should have eliminated that aspect.

If you look in Task Manager is there a process syntpenh.exe or very similar running - this is part of the Synaptics driver.

There is the syntpenh.exe running in the Taskmanager. Obviously the drivers are there, but something is keeping them from operating. What do you think?

My netbook has a Synaptics touchpad and I have confirmed through the use of Process Explorer that SynTPEnh.exe is the only process associated with Synaptics.

The only conclusion I can come to is that there may be a problem (intermittent) with the touchpad itself.

As a last thought does it make any difference if a mouse is plugged in or not in terms of enabling/disabling the touchpad?

The wireless mouse plugged in did not affect it in the past. I unplugged the mouse / followed the other thread - held down the FN/F9 button for nearly a minute but nothing happens.
As I say, it did this a year or so ago, and when I formatted the drive / reinstalled Vista, I noticed the touchpad was working again. Then I noticed here about a month ago it gave up again. I want to say some software is upsetting it & giving it heartburn - but then again, you might be correct in that the touchpad is simply had its day. The system is about 2 years of age.

The only way you are going to determine if a specific program is the source of the problem is to go back to square one :)

Thinking out loud I cannot see how another program could do that, unless it is allied to writing with a mouse/tablet. Do you have a tablet (Wacom, etc) installed?

I am not familiar with Vista as I never ran it - migrated last August XP > 7 x64 in which I have disabled all the tablet PC facilities, including writing.

I don't think I can contribute any further in this thread.

    Thanks PeteC - as to a Tablet, I wouldn't even have a clue as to what that is. I appreciate your efforts in this, but it might be even as you've suggested - a downed Touchpad. :-}
