    Hi,

Cause my paranoia is thru the roof since joining this site, I just tried to run a Housecall scan. I had done this in the past, tho infrequently, and my system is clean and runs perfectly, I am just more paranoid than ever.

I got the new fast version for my 32-bit, but finally got error message re Runtime Error.

Then went in and deleted all previous versions of Housecall and then cleaned the reg, there were a couple. Tried again, same deal.

I then went to SunMicro and downloaded the latest Java thinking I might not have it, and why not, I only have one mug of coffee a day, after all.

But trying to install it, got another error message saying it had encountered a problem and had to shut down.

Can anyone surmise what is going on?

    Many thanks.

OK wait; i just noticed a verify button (adorable) for Java at Sun and used it. It came up, Whoops! You do not have the right Java, you pathetic be-atch. The Whoops! part it actualy said.

So now I will get the right one and see if this fixes things.

No Go. tried to run Housecall again got same app has asked Runtime to terminate it IN AN UNUSUAL WAY, OMG, OMG... and then complex error message.

I am now getting a little hysterical. But not completely.
    _______________________________
    Update:

Am little less hysterical cause I remembered way back doing a Panda scan. I went there, got the FX plug in, then got their scanner app and it is now running. But says can take up to an HOUR. But never for under 20GBs of files, right?

    That should take no time

At least some online scanner of some repute installed and is running. So nothing appears to be fending these off totally. My problem appears TrendMicro Housecall indigenous.

But I would still naturally like to repair what is wrong.

i am remaining calm and will report back, hopefully not speaking in tongues.

    Update from the Asylum:

I just got Bitdefender after Googling, and it is updating its database and then I will run it too.

I did just read online that the Panda sometimes gives false positives. If true, I think that is simple sadism.

Edit: both running now....I know that is bad but I couldn't help it, I need to run everything there is immediately if not sooner.

I fear mathematical probability more and more cause I never had anything bad yet.

O How do I luv thee, new Bitdefender? Let me count the ways.

Cause, while you slowed down the Panda which is still running, you scanned 227, 177 files and found.....NOTHING.

Edit: Via Google I just see Kspersky has good free online scan to. So I wnet there and it says it is not AVAILABLE right now, why not try a free trial, yadda, yadda.

I need to calm down and wait for the Panda to finish. Maybe it ate some bad eucalyptus leaves and is in a bad mood and so finding things which are not there or are benign.

I have no clue. But I do not like it. Does anyone now what it is? Cause they think it is dangerous, the not benign one.

I think I should get rid of Viewpoint Media player.

I swear, this is my last compulsive post (probably).

That F secure thingy is amazing.....runs like the wind, and it too found 3 infected files!!! but also, OMG, gave me the option to repair those! Can you believe that?:D

Here is the report it generated:
    Scanning Report
    Wednesday, December 30, 2009 19:07:43 - 19:11:26

    Computer name: HUMAN-3927A14C8
    Scanning type: Quick scan
    Target: System
    3 malware found
    TrackingCookie.Xiti (spyware)

    * System (Disinfected)

    TrackingCookie.Statcounter (spyware)

    * System (Disinfected)

    TrackingCookie.Atwola (spyware)

    * System (Disinfected)
    B
I am still creeped out. But the word "disinfected" is the best work in life.

Does anyone have any takes on this F secure thingy? Is it reliable?

I appreciate nobody here has hit me with a brick. Believe that.

PS, Yes, OK now it is public...I named this system HUMAN. Please, nobody make jokes; it is a living being with its own little personality; they all are.

    G'Day "Jilly "

Looking at your posts! - you obviously are in the process of trying to remove a Virus or other parasites from your PC System !?

1st point I would like to make is that, in my opinion, you are going about this the wrong way, if you have installed multiple Ant-Virus tools and or Internet Security Tools.

2nd point is that performing virus scans or installing a Anti-Virus program after you have been infected, does not remove some of the parasites like Trojans and other Worms or Viruses from your PC, it's akin to shutting the gate after the Horses have gotten out of the Corral.

3rd point is that I'm not sure of the sequence of your posts and the actual help you need, can you enlighten me please. Would also be good to know what you have installed so far.

4th point, contrary to popular believe, parasites (Virus, Worm, Malware, Spyware, Adware, Trojans, etc.) can be successfully removed / cleaned from a PC's Hard Disk Drive, it all depends on how you go about it and the Tools you have at your disposal.

Could you also please complete your "System Specs" in your User CP (cPanel Profile) - Thanks

    pcbugfixer ;)

    Just one more:

I ran comodo reg cleaner, but then also went in and deleted the viewpoint folder in the reg. Cause whatever that player or "Experience', it was all needless and also maybe evil. Unlike the Jimi Hendrix Experience.

I need to get calm to work now. But anyone having input on any of this will be much appreciated.

    Boy, the ultimate confidence-inspiring username!!!

First I have never yet had a real infection in any system. i learned to evolve a good amalgam of protection apps and these change over time on all 3 of my systems.

Next, on this one right now, I have Comodo firewall, Avira free, Malwarebytes paid for with real time protection and Superantispy also with real time protection but I learned here not to let both start wiht Windows and so I now only use the Superantispy scan.

    I also, naturlaly have Spywareblaster.

And this XP Pro SP3 + all post SP3 hotfixes system is full patched.

The three scans I ran were all stand alone apps, so they conflicted with nothing..

My posts are, believe it or not, in chronological order.

I think i had nothing serious to begin with, but got rid of what Panda told me was the infected file it did not like; Viewpoint Experience....and all its reg keys.

The other two were cookies. i had not scanned this system today with my usual apps.

but I learned from jump to run only one antivirus....and I keep up with detection rates, etc, and change mine if necessary.

Also please know, I had zero symptoms of anything wrong to begin with. I am just paranoid, esp reading the malware threads on this site.

I appreciate yr presence in this thread and agian, also your username!

    G'DAy Jilly,

Sorry to tell you, but with the multiple installations and Brands you have used, I do not consider good or reliable!

Some are good to use as secondary tools but not as a primary protection program. "Spywareblaster" is not a primary security utility!

You need to establish a good Internet Security Program to protect your PC system and foremost get rid of i.e. un-install all the others and then with one good Primary Security setup, you also install Spybot Search & Destroy as well as AdAware, both are free.

As a primary protection you could use the default Windows Firewall and get the free AVG Anti-virus suite which covers malware, etc.

Whichever you use, all need to be correctly installed and configured otherwise they can duplicate functions which becomes counter productive (one will knock out the other and void the functions they perform) and compromise your PC System protection.

As I have now shared in a rush between clients in a PM, my current array of resident protection apps has been carefully arrived at:

    Avira Antivirus free

Comodo Firewall Pro....NOT the Suite the Firewall only/

Malwarebytes paid for version with the real time protection option engaged.

Superantispy....also paid for version but no longer running in real time, I just use its scan every day.

There are no conflicts among these apps.

    This system:
Optiplex GX620, Presler chip; P-D@ 3.40; 3 GBs of DDR2; two SATA controlled HDDS, I use XXclone to do increcental updates; Antec PSU I upgraded to, 430W....plenty as I have onboard video only.

Again, I run XP Pro, SP3, fully patched.

I sincerely, totally appreciate your help, but I ran Avira after doing what I did which I think was no biggie anyhow, and I think I'm fine. I am also running another Panda scan just for the heck of it.

Again the 3 online sans I found and ran are all stand alone temporary apps and conflicted with nothing.

As I shared in a PM in response to one of yours, I had no symptoms at all. Seeing all the poor humans here whose systems are infected, has made me even more paranoid than usual. If that is possible. lol

I also apologize for having been responsible for yr confusions given the real time, ad hoc chronology of my posts.

(If this gets anymore boring, it could be marketed as a sleeping pill.)

Now, and yes, since I am mainly self taught, I sometime do do things in unoffical or unconventional ways. Thing is, I usually get it done: i hang in and make myself figure it out. I take after my dad. Yes, Jack. No jokes.

    Results of second Panda scan:

    Spyware/Virtum... Spyware
    Latent
    Hide + Info
    1. c:\program files\viewpoint\viewpoint experien...e technology\components\swfview.dll

I Googled. The whole Viewpoint thingy is loaded with AOL 9.1. It is also not necessary, I have learned, and, I had already uninstalled the main parts. No related BHO came up in HJT scan.

This is what I did after determining, at worse, this thing can do keylogging and stuff & some tracking , but nothing of major concern which is why, I think, all the other scans came up clean cept for tracking cookies.

So did simple command prompt for the single file: C:\program files\viewpoint\viewpoint experience technology\components\swfview.dll

Then I killed the dll file. (I think of deleted as killed; it's an Italian thing, OK?)

When I can, I will run another Panda scan to make sure it is gone and dead. This was no biggie, guys, but I am still glad I found out bout it; it has been in this system since I did a clean install in April…april 8th to be exact, said it right there..(hadda to get my Magicjack working properly)….and now, it should be MORTE.

    I shall soon see.

I am Al Pacino in Godfather III (Have the 5 DISK boxset on DVD of course0: "Just when I think i'm out, they pull me back in. "

Third Panda scan came up with yet another not bigtime dangerous dll file associated with this Viewpoint thingy.

Again, this is nothing really dangerous, I Googled.

    This time: c:\recycler\s-1-5-21-343818398-963894560-725345543-1003\dc15.dll

I did the same as above and killed this one too. (Zazza!!;))

Panda is the only app that keeps picking these up. Says "BUY ME, I will get rid of this other Viewpoint dll for Eeewww. "

    When The Pope gets married.

I will do this over and over if need be.... until I kill all of them. These are NOT bigtime evil insects. They Hijack nuthin, they do not replicate, they do not mess things up.

And everyone who runs this build of AOL has them. Unless they get rid of Viewpoint and everything associated with it.

Says you know when you have this cause you keep keep getting popup ads.

I get none of those. Panda is trying to scare me and get me to buy it. I now get. Or....move to China where the pandas live. I ain't doin neither.

    Soon, this will be OVAH.

New in infinite series of Panda scans came up with this:
    c:\system volume information\_restore{472be5b...abd5-7909739e772d}\rp2\a0000837.dll

But just after the scan I turned off system restore to get rid of my existing points, so, when I searched for this file it was already gone.

This is nauseating a little. I do not care, I am GETTING RID OF ALL OF IT. Even tho it is no way really dangerous, sneaky is a deal breaker.
