    Hi Jilly,

About 10 years I ran K12LTSP using old 486 PCs. At that time hardware was very expensive. Windows was installed on the server with the X window forward to the clients. There was no OS installed on clients even without hard drive. All clients can run software on the server simultaneously. This technology is now marketed today under a fancy name "thin client ". Actually this is the technology of 10 years ago.

Same as another fancy product on today's market "cloud computing ". "Cloud Computing" comes from Grid computing/utility computing which are not new technolgy. I ran Globus toolkit, the grid engine, about 6 years ago sharing data amongst computers. Globus toolkit from IBM, Grid Engine from Sun, etc. are Open Source technology.

If you want to find new IT technology searching around on Open Source. Don't be caught by the fancy products which are re-packed by the sales for marketing only.

That is the disadvantage in running up-to-day Windows. New version can't run properly on old PC. When you purchase a new version of Windows you have to update your PC. Dislike Open Source OS. New version Open Source OS can run strong on old PC. They have both 32bit and 64bit version. Of course if the old PC is a single core machine then you have to sacrify the advantage of dual-core architechure of the software.

I agree with the above. I railed against this way back, even getting that Vista especially, was, in part, engineered to create a new market for new hardware.

Obviously, that PC Mfgs all have contracts with MS means quid pro quos get cut behind the scenes.

HOWEVER, we must be accurate and objective: the only reason I may someday be interested in W7, given, I read---posted a link here somewhere--- that W7 was successfully loaded & ran beautifully on an older system on which Vista could not even be installed, forget run.

Caveat Emptor is a very important concept within Capitalism; competition is the engine of the healthy paradigm, after all..

Historically, with their infinitely deep pockets for huge teams of attorneys worldwide, being able to tolerate the cost of appeals and delays without breaking a sweat, MS has been able to erode the model, and so, has compromised the Emptoring (new word.) But NOT IN EVERY CASE.

And yet, with a healthy, informed clientbase, the capitalist model can manifest; the success of this or that, PROPERLY determined by THE MARKETPLACE.

The power is meant to be in the hands of the consumer, not any given corporate entity. And in this, far too many people worldwide have been sheep.

So it is our mandate as consumers to be educated and discerning, courageous and make informed decisions.

i would rather have eaten worms than run Vista.

But it is also true, when you were hell bend on loading it on the old system, despite all you clearly KNOW, you were just that, hell bent and moved to override what the system was capable of doing, and also play fast and loose with the law in ways.

Why? As capitulation to the demands of the Ipod/itunes gift. Is WHY.

I Googled and discovered Vista was a recommendation from Apple itself as necessary in this re Windows. Of course, those who can afford it and go MAC never had a problem.

I get the appeal of a "free' device; we are human. But, it seems you got taken from behind the wheel of your Benz or Vette or fantasy ride of yr choice, and let yourself get thrown into the back seat. Or even the trunk.

Capitalism often means a company surviving, by, whatever means necessary, creating displeasure with existing products to generate lust, and so, a booming market, for new products.

Doesn't mean we have to go along like lemmings.

Many lessons to be learned here, starting with what are we wiling to sacrifice in maybe the more precious currencies.....to keep up?

Tangential issues: is texting eroding human communication? Will our thumbs begin to evolve differently?;) Were we really that miserable before the advent of touch screens? Is newer better? Is smaller better? Do we get that kids all over spend much time online researching Air Jordan release dates?

That Nike can still promulgate this with MJ in retirement for so many years.....well, think about it. Gives the "Bull(s)" in BS a whole new spin, right? Know what AJs cost to make?

Are we gonna sit by and let commerce define COOL? Be it re technology or fashion or anything else? Are we truly that shallow & malleable?

But OK< faster....is totally better. lol

I believe there's a price to be paid for everything. Issue is, which are we willing to pay...short of becoming Faust?

And here's an interesting link for you:

Perhaps the gift was mean't to be a litmus test and a learning experience far beyond its obvious potential!

    Hi Jilly,

Thanks for your comment and link.

Only curiosity draws my time and effort. Actually I learn nothing on my finding which can't be used for some other cases.

IPhone is targeted at CEO and top management staffs as Apple claims. I doubt how can CEO has time to venture its setup and to learn using its full function. It is not simple and straightwards, like operating a small computer. There is no manual coming with the product. I have to make heavy searching on Internet. There was NO fun to me.

I thought the gift you received which compelled to you all it did, including starting this thread......was an IPOD.

Again, I see some precious lessons in all this. But nobody for whom it's some series of unachieved goals will.

The, OMG, morphing Apple device.... I dunno. I have either lost my mind or been abducted by aliens.

One can only hope they have broadband.

I wish you the best, Satimis.
