okay this is the first time ive noticed that win7 does not have an email client software. that sorta blew me away seeing some email client has been part of windows for one heck of a long time.

doesnt bother me cuz i use eudora but need to know the best way or if there is one to bring outlook express emails and address book over to windows7 ??? dont know much about windows live but is this the only solution except for say incredimail, eudora or web based programs ??? i read a bunch of things online on how to bring vista mail over to win7 but if i have a xp system using express what are my options for these clients ???

    thanks.

As you have discovered, previously included programs like Photo Gallery, Mail, Movie Maker and Messenger are not present in Windows 7, they have to be downloaded separately. The one you need to download is Windows Live Mail (WLM). Go here to download Live Setup and then download WLM.

Here is the transfer procedure from OE to WLM:
    CONTACTS
    OE
Go to File > Export > Address Book and select Comma Separated Values (CSV) > Export, select the fields you want or, for more safety, select all the fields and save the file to your external device.
    WLM
Click Contacts in the bottom left corner > Menus top right (or Alt+M) > Import > CSV (Comma Separated Values) and browse to the file on your external device.

    ACCOUNTS
    OE
Go to Tools > Accounts > Mail Tab and select the first one you want to export. Click on it and then press Export. Save the file to your external device. Repeat this procedure for any other e-mail accounts you want to export.
    WLM
Go to Tools (press Alt if the Toolbar is not showing) > Accounts > Import > Browse to the file on your external device.

    MESSAGES
    OE
Create folders on your external device and name them OEInbox and OESent. Open Outlook Express, go to the Inbox, click on a message line, then press Ctrl+A to Select All and drag the highlighted items into OEInbox. Repeat it for Sent Items and any other mail boxes that you have.
    WLM
Open WLM, display the Inbox and open the OEInbox folder on external device, Select All (Ctrl+A) the items from the OEInbox folder and drag them to the WLM Inbox. Repeat this for any other mail boxes.

thanks for the info. am i the only one that thinks leaving out windows mail was a mistake in win7 ??? i do understand the security risk of mail programs and pop3 but to me this is a drastic change for people that have used express forever.

like i said i dont know much about windows live so im asking here. i would have to setup a windows live id - right ??? after that is done will i be able to setup in my case and my clients use for the most part centurytel.net as their email address so will i be able to setup the variables for centurytel.net to be able to download those emails from the isp ??? like i said i have no idea how windows live works but my guess its about the same as a yahoo or hotmail account but those do not let me download from another isp.

All you need is a Hotmail-type account to download any of the ‘live’ programs.

Briefly, Outlook Express’s successor in Vista is Windows Mail. In Windows 7, its successor is Windows Live Mail. Note that they are different programs. You can incorporate a Hotmail or Gmail account into WLM, alongside a POP3 account.

You do not need a "hotmail" type account to download and install Windows Live software. Download it here:
http://download.live.com/wlmail It's a selected-deselected option in Windows Live Essentials package. Windows Live Mail works with any POP account, just as Outlook Express does.

Due to EU recent settlements Windows 7 EU versions don't come with the IE Web browser. Email was already removed from Windows 7 thus no stipulations in the settlement for MS email clients now or in the future. This gives all users worldwide a choice of which email client to use.

There are many free and paid email clients that are better than Outlook Express ever was.

okay i know of eudora but they have stopped doing anything more with it and that is bad cuz now im stuck using it because nothing can import my huge address book or emails and folders. incredimail is okay am not a fan of mozillas email client so what others are out there for pop3 that are good ?

i definitely am going to have to bring my xp clients over to something that will import all there email info. so give me some examples that you like so i can play with them.

    thanks tony

Agree with WLM. Installed it on 2 PC's that have Win 7. Kind of a mixture of OE and Outlook together. Had no problems importing addresses etc.

thanks for the list of free email programs i will look at them and see what might work best for my client base. personally i love eudora but wouldnt put anyone on it now seeing as qualcomm is not supporting it any longer. pegasus looks interesting. i would put outlook on put thats not a free program and most of my clients dont buy the office suite to get it.

    thanks again.

okay ive tested about 6 of these other free email programs and honestly i am not impressed at all. right now installing thunderbird and if it can import all my eudora email folders and address book then i will be impressed.

okay thunderbird failed on importing my express and eudora so this is not an option.

outlook would be the best option if it was free.

so im asking is there a way to bring over windows mail to windows 7. its the best thing closest to express ??? i have a windows mail vista system so if i can somehow move windows mail to a win7 machine that would be the best option for my existing xp clients.

    hopefully this can be done.

Go to TonyT's Post #8. He has a link to WLM. Download it and import you stuff. That is designed for Win7 and looks like OE and Outlook put together.

Realize that it's Outlook Express that uses the non standard/proprietary message formats (DBX), while others use the standard MBX type mail folders.

Address books can be imported into Thunderbird from any mail client if the address book is a CSV file.

Find this file on your computer: nndbase.txt (your Eudora address book). Copy it, open in Notepad, delete the lines of code, save as addresses.csv, import into Thunderbird. AFAIK, Eudora does not have an address book export feature. But you can import the Eudora addresses into Outlook Express and export from there.
