I have been using Avast Antivirus (free edition ) for about two years now, and I update once a month.

It has always been about 1 to 2mb of data to update the virus database.

Today, Monday, December 28 2009, I decide to update and Avast wants to download 32mb (thirty two megabytes) of data onto my computer.

No, I did not select to upgrade to premium, or upgrade to a new version!

There is nothing I can do right now! I have dialup and can't have my computer on for ten hours wondering *** is going on!

Is there another "lean, mean" freeware fighting machine that I can switch to?

I cannot and do not want to download 32mb of data to upgrade Avast.

Does anybody have any suggestions what a person with dialup should do?

    Mark

    Mark,

If I had to guess, you probably have a new version to download. That would explain the size. If I remember correctly, I had a version update not long ago.

Mark, Right click your Blue "A" ball in the lower right of screen. Left click 'About Avast' on the menu, and it will give you a list of all you want to know. Neil :D

32MB sounds like a whole installation file (in fact, depending on version, it's about 39-40MB).

Everyone to their own poison. I used Avira free and had a major problem which Avira Techo could not fix. I went back to Avast and use it on 5 home comps in the family, but all with Broadband. Dialup always presents the time and connection hassle.
What version did you find Mark?
    Mine is 4.8. Neil.;)

BTW, be sure to disconnect from the internet after downloading. And either uninstall or deactivate Avast before running Avira. Running two antivirus programs is a no no.
    Hope this helps.
