When I go to Start, Turn Off Computer I get an hour glass that just sits there and takes a very long time until I get the Shut Down Button, then it takes a very long time to finally shut down completely.

This has been doing this for a couple of weeks now. I have run all of my Anti-Virus and Spyware programs and got rid of what it had found, but the problem still exist.

Can someone please help me with this very annoying problem.

    Thank you.

Have you tried to erase software you no longer or seldom use. Check your Startup and again erase any named titles that WindowsXP uses at startup as this will decrease time taken.
Also try to defragment your hard drive.

    Slow shut down

The windows shutdown provides the o/s time to "properly" close all open programs that you may have open (giving you the chance to save data). It also allows for the closing of program and TSR's that you don't see.

You can check your msconfig to see what other items are running in the background that you never see. Use some caution doing this. Some items in the list are needed, but things like "googledesktop" aren't really need at start up.

While this handles programs at startup, they still need to be shut down at the end of your session.

If/when you make changes to this, I'd recommend doing one at a time unless you definatley know you don't need it. Each time you make a change, it will require a reboot of your system.

    Hope this helps out.

Do you remember when your computer shutdown time was faster? you can do a system restore to that point...
