So I scanned and removed a virus on my desktop computer a few days ago, figured everything was good since my anti-virus programs caught the virus and removed it. I went to restart the computer and when it got to the log in screen and I select my profile it loads for a few seconds and then shoots me back to the log in screen. I can't even get in to safe mode.

Any help would be much appreciated.

A Repair Install would be the recommended way since you have evidently allowed your AV program to quarantine or possibly delete a required Windows System file.

Another possibility would be to locate and retrieve that file from the quarantine folder and put it back where it is needed for booting. Doing that will require you to have some means of accessing the files on your drive. If you are using the FAT32 file storage system, that's easy enough. I doubt that's the case.

If using the NTFS file storage system, there are ways to gain access to the files. One way would be to boot to the XP setup CD and invoke the Recovery Console.

Another way would be to use a BartPE boot CD or equal.

Yet another way would beto put the HD in another computer as a slave.

You'll have to fly by the seat of your pants on this so be sure you're up to it before going forward. Also consider backing up any critical files (once you gain access) before doing anything that might hose them.

EDIT- It might pay you to post your problem in the Virus forum and give the name of the virus you cleaned. Someone there may have more insight or specific experience.

    Hi
If it happened to be a Virut or Sality infection the only option is a reformat. Will it boot into safe mode?

FYI surferdude2 it seems the post was moved from Malware and Virus Removal to here.
