I just upgraded from Vista Home Premium to Windows 7 Ultimate (Full) and my 1yr old HP laptop (Sept08) does not support "Aero" due to a graphics driver that I need WDDM 1.0 or higher and my computer does not support "virtualization" to run the "XP Mode ". Any ideas???

Did you update your graphics driver?? Did you check the HP site for any 'updates' for your computer?

Any idea what graphics card your HP is using?

    "People wanna know" :D

As far as the virtualization goes, XP mode uses hardware virtualization. If your processor isn't capable of it, it's not. If you want to run XP mode, I don't think there's much you can do about it other than purchase and install a new processor.

Don't know about Aero. Probably a video card or video memory problem.

Virtual software is available free from microsoft, virtualbox, vmware, and more. Do some research on google and look at these options. You will need the XP Pro disc. If you choose the microsoft software be sure to opt for virtual pc 2007sp1.

WIndows 7 Laptops and XP Mode

Unless you have a high end laptop, you may not be able to run XP mode directly. Only certain CPUs allow for this feature. If you have an intel or amd, you can find which processor you have through your system information settings and then check the CPU sites to see if that CPU supports this feature.

Make sure you didn't get the Windows 7 Starter version or the Home version. Neither of these will support the XP mode either.

As for "virtualization ", not only does it depend on the processor, more importantly it also relies on virtualization supported and/or being switched on in the BIOS.

There are many laptop BIOS that do not support virtualization. Some others may support it, but you'll have to switch it on in the BIOS.

The only "advantage" with virtualization is that you can run "Windows XP Mode ", but you can still use Microsoft's Virtual PC 2007 (or any other VPC software) to run Windows XP.

To BluzKat: Yea I called HP and we logged onto their website and they do not have any graphic drivers for Win7.

To Zander: I have an Intel Centrino Core 2Duo CPU. It could be a costly process to upgrade motherboards on laptops which will void my 4 year warranty.

To Denstoe: Aero is a Graphics driver problem that HP cannot solve. Virtual PC sounds cool...Imma check it out. Yes I do have a retail box copy of Windows XP Professional.

To Wipper: My laptop is mid to high end. Cost $1000 when I bought it. It was custom built and had all the latest upgrades. The processor is a Centrino Core 2Duo CPU. I purchased Win 7 Ultimate.

To Arie: I see that Virtual PC 2007 SP1 is available and I will try it. Being that I having too many upgrades issues with Win 7 Ultimate I sent it back to MS for a refund and I'm gonna install Vista Ultimate Instead. Then I'm going to install Virtual PC 2007 SP1 so I can run XP :)
