I bought a new laptop yesterday and I need the media to do a clean install.
Is there any place I can download the 64 bit image?

Either my search skills stink or it's not out there legitimately without purchasing a new license.

Why after one day does the machine need a re-install?

Didn't the machine at lease come with a restore function?

Dell for example will send you the media for free...Or you can borrow a DVD from a friend or co-worker.

Yea none of my friends have a 64 bit version. I have a 32 bit disk myself.

I want to do a clean install without all the "fluff" that a restore disk installs.

Write an Email to the manufacturer of your laptop. Depending on the manufacturer, you should have the media sent to you free of charge. In my experience the only problem will be with HP, so do not even try to ask for the media from them.

For future reference, you should know that buying a computer with a pre-installed o/s will always mean you have tons of the 'fluff', as you - amusingly - refer to the mostly pointless and totally unnecessary applications and software that are bundled with it. This does not infringe upon your rights as a consumer, so strictly speaking, you have also purchased a copy of the o/s which the person/s who sold the computer to you have supplied you with. They also give you advise on how to make back-up, or 'factory restore' disc's. Of course, this is useless to you as it will include the 'fluff'. So, before buying, ask for a copy of the o/s and if the seller cannot supply you, do not buy. This means it is pretty pointless shopping for a new computer in any and all of the high street shops, such as PC World, Dixons and Comet etc.

This is the Laptop I got.

    http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Asus+-+...rlot/9556036.p?id=1218124204238&skuId=9556036

I just want to do a clean install with no recovery partition, no OEM apps doing the task that Windows can do just fine.

I'll continue to see if I can find a disk locally. I figured one of you "Gurus" could point me to a site to download the image.

Some of the disks are a 32/64 bit combo. My disk is 32 bit only.
    Thanks for the effort.

Is that the exact same computer in your link to Best Buy? Have to ask because it says "Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium Edition 64-bit operating system preinstalled ". Is the OS you have now 32 bit or 64? If it's 64, perhaps they gave you a 32 bit disc and your 64 bit is on the recovery partition? Not likely, I know, but had to ask.

I bought a similar Asus laptop from Best Buy last March. Mine came with a recovery CD, however mine is 64 bit, same as the OS that was installed on it at the time. You should have a recovery partition on that puter. If your current OS is indeed 64 bit, perhaps you should try using it. I'm not sure if yours is the same as mine or not but on mine, you press F9 when you boot to gain access to it. Have a look at the manual that came with it. It tells you about it somewhere in there.

Otherwise, I guess you'd have to either have a talk with the people at Best Buy or contact Asus. If it were me, I'd try the Best Buy route first. I doubt you'll find any place you can download it legitimately.

OOPS, I guess I goofed. I see now you want to do a clean install without all the extras. Guess my info is no good then.

In that case, if you do get a disc from them, my guess is it will be a recovery disc and not just a Windows disc. Perhaps there's a way to strip the windows files out of it and burn them to a DVD and do it that way but I have no idea how you'd go about it. Sorry I didn't read your post closer.

Yes I want to do a clean install but do not have 64 bit media in my possession.
I only have a 32 bit version from my other laptop.

    Mission accomplished.

I purchased an upgrade from Microsoft (Guess I'll be upgrading one of my other computers) which allowed me to download the ISO.
I learned that Windows7 will burn a ISO file with no additional software!

Booted from the burned DVD, Deleted all partitions, formatted, and installed Windows7. No problem, didn't even have to hunt a driver!

Was refreshing to go to add and remove programs and it was empty. :D
