I have a problem with Outlook Express version 6. I have searched the boards and cannot seem to find the solution to my problem.
Everything was working fine until I gave in and upgraded to the latest IE8 from Microsoft. Now OE is very slow. After I open the program it takes almost a full minute to read the first mail. This happens even if the message has been there before and previously opened. After the first one is read, everything else works as fast as it is supposed to.

I am running Windows XP Professional Edition version 2002 SP3 with 2.53GHz and 1 GB of RAM.
I have Avast 4.8 Home Edition that is always kept up to date. I have run several other antivirus programs as well and everything checks clear. I have also ran SpyBot, Spyware Doctor, AdAware, CC Cleaner, ATF Cleaner and ran a defrag on the system after cleaning out all temporary files. Re-booting has not helped. All of these programs are up to date and have been on the system for quite a while with no problems.
I have also tried the following "“

Start > Run > type in one and then run each of the others.
    regsvr32 urlmon.dll
    regsvr32 mshtml.dll
    regsvr32 shdocvw.dll
    regsvr32 browseui.dll

As of now I don’t know what else to try. I have some mail in the program that I do not want to lose or I would try the uninstall and re-install of Outlook Express.

Is there any hope to resolve this problem? Thanks in advance for any advice. I have found this to be a great board. Merry Christmas!

Some general thoughts - not that I experienced this problem when running OE on XP .....

OE was replaced with Windows Mail (when Vista was released and IE was version 7?) and then by Windows Live Mail, so it is pretty long in the tooth, but compatability with IE8 should not be a problem.

That said a couple of suggestions .....

You have re-registered the library files, but not OE itself .....

    Start > Run > msimn /reg > Enter

See An Outlook Express basic repair kit. There are other suggestions to follow up there too - your Identity may have a degree of corruption.

Another thing to try is to turn off email scanning in your av.
Which suggests that you do not have a backup :(

How to back up and to restore Outlook Express data

When I used OE and now Outlook I moved the Store folders to another drive which is backed up on an hourly basis.

This is an old chestnut that has been around for ages. Try these two registry changes, but create a restore point first just in case you have ‘finger’ problems.

Close Outlook Express then open a Run window (Windows key+R), type regedit, press Enter and in the left pane navigate to
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{FB7199AB-79BF-11d2-8D94-0000F875C541}\InProcServer32
In the right pane, double-click on the (Default) value and delete whatever is entered there, leaving it blank. Click OK. Don’t change any other keys that are present in the right pane!

Now perform exactly the same step with the key directly underneath, LocalServer32.

Outlook Express should now open normally.

    Re: OE6 slowdown

I have tried all of the suggestions beginning with
    (Start > Run > msimn /reg > Enter)
No fix there. I did a full backup and tried the
    (HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{FB7199AB-79BF-11d2-8D94-0000F875C541}\InProcServer32
In the right pane, double-click on the (Default) value and delete whatever is entered there, leaving it blank. Click OK. Don’t change any other keys that are present in the right pane!

Now perform exactly the same step with the key directly underneath, LocalServer32.)
The problem still exists. I then tried the reinstall of OE6 and that didn't fix it either.
Thanks to PeteC and BurrWalnut for the suggestions.
What should I do next? Maybe go back to IE6 and see if that fixes it?

I thougth this was normal behavior:confused:
My first mail of the day opens is about 15 seconds which is way longer then all other mail...I have severl menu type screens on my XP system that do the same thing. Once things get loaded into ram I'm good to go.

    Re: outlook Express Slow

    Steve:
If this is normal behavior, I must have been very fortunate. For several years it never happened. The first one always opened just as quickly as the rest of them. This problem just started recently and it was after I had installed IE8. That is why I thought IE8 caused the problem, but Microsoft says that it should not cause this. ( And it's about to run me crazy!)
    Thanks for the reply.

    Re: Outlook Express slow

Thanks to all who replied. The problem has not been solved, but this has been on the board long enough. Let's just close this thread and let it go.

    Thanks again to all.
