which anti-virus is best to use? I have a dell dimention 4800 and what web site can I get it from?

 

Several free AV to choose from by Googling it "free antivirus" or looking here in BBS for their recomendations.

some folks like Avast
but my personal pref is AVG which comes free or full and paid and is pretty cheap FAR less intrusive than Norton which is a major system hog.

If you are a person that likes to know what is happening then I vote against Avira. I have been using it for years on my desktop but "they" have decided that I do not deserve to know what is going on. About half the time I start a manual update (I have a very slow dial up connection and want to control what is happening in my PC) it decides to do it's thing "behind closed doors ". I do not like any software doing any kind of download where I do not know what is happening or how big it is.

I have been using Avast! on my netbook since January and every time it updates I get a window letting me know what is going on. So I am switching my desktop to Avast! also.

Personally, I use either Avast or AVG anti virus. Both are free. I also use Malwarebytes and Spybot. All free programs. I have never had a virus successfully infect my computer. Big Al

 

I am using AVG 9.0 and doesn't seems to be at all problematic.Only Disable the link scanner and Resident shield which conflicts with other programs and uses the recources.Do a custom installation of AVG.I keep on installing and uninstalling softwares regularly and am still safe from a long time.
I have used McAfee that too paid one and its absolutely worthless.It can't even detect and if it detects can't kill the virus.Your PC will become hub of virus if you install McAfee.I had used Avast for some time and found that it was also not able to detect viruses.Also have used Kaspersky and Trend micro.Kaspersky is good AV provided you are ready to sacrifice your 40-50 % of your memory.The best paid one is Dr Web security or Trend micro.Both of these work as Anti Virus and Anti Spyware.I recommend you try Dr web command line scanner,its free and good to scan for viruses once a week.It can kill everything and does a deep scanning.
Also you should use Trend micro RU Botter or something like this,it free and will protect you of online web threats,before you visit the web site.

I ditto broni. I too used AVG for a long time and in my case, in one system, it too created a software conflict. I then moved on to Avira.

I think it's important for us to understand that these apps, in their efficacy & soundness & relative "issues" are not static. Not every new build improves things, and we should monitor reviews and detection rates ongoing as things change.

Also major amalgamaters of systems cut deals with software companies, and anyone not about research and learning might assume that a given commercial app preloaded or "recommended" by say Dell or HP is a good choice and not just commerce.

I even recently read, as I have always been adverse to anything Norton and anything McAvee, I try to explain why to friends who go there.....recently read the latest version of Norton is less of a resource hog & more viable than former versions.

I will believe it when I see it. But it's possible.

I have never had a virus. I once had a trojan but I killed it.
i mainly get tracking cookies, and only sometimes. Being a puter clean freak is not a bad thing.

Reviews are significant ....if, that is you take the time to read all you can. Gather all those data, digest and then make a decision. then run it and test it over time. Keep looking at reviews. If you find it Less than, try another.

There are no guarantees and nothing is perfect and apps change over time.

Again, right now I have Avira on all my systems for anti virus; Comodo firewall and lost of antispyware apps.

We learning by learning, lol, but far more by doing and observing.

 

Hello, I always used Avira AV(Free) and Comodo Firewall (Free) then on Oct 22 when Win 7 came out I started to use "Microsoft Security Essentials" and I think its pretty good. Any ideas on this choice. Any articles I have read all have been very favorable. Thanks for your time,

just curious, are you running W7 on your Inspiron with 1 GB of ram or only your Dimesion with 2? Are you runing it at all?

Alas I know nothing about the software you are asking about, but I know many will know lots.

It sounds not disgusting, I just googled. I might just test it on my backup drive! But I am adverse to multifunction apps, and just as with peripherals, I go for the stand alones.

 

I stopped using nortons products when symantec took over and they ******* up a good company. That said, in 2008, consumer reports rated their security suite as the "least intrusive" of the major firewall/virus products.

Although not cheap, the license is for three computers, so spreading the cost across my three machines and the price becomes quite reasonable.

Performance tests clearly prove to me that it's not intrusive or a hog at all. IMHO, of course.

 

Hi Jilly, I'm using Win 7 Home Premium on my Dell Dimension Desktop with 2 GB of Ram and its running great. The Inspiron Laptop has 1 GB but running XP.
