When I installed a Memorex MRX-530L DVD+-RW it was detected in the BIOS I burned a couple of disks. On the next start-up I heard 1 beep which is code for a system error. So I went into the BIOS and the DVDRW was not installed under Primary Slave Device. So I experimented I uninstalled the device in the Device Manager rebooted and let the OS install new hardware. I then rebooted again and the DVDRW was installed. It seems whenever I use the device it gets uninstalled in the BIOS. Device Manager says the device is working properly. Is there a way keep the device installed in the BIOS after I use it. Also the installation instructions suggest that the DVDRW should be the master. Does this matter.

If you had a secondary IDE controller you could make it master on that, but I suspect you don't have one.

If your C: drive is on the primary master, it needs to stay there, otherwise you could make the DVD the master (but that might cause a slight problem for the BIOS if it expects the primary master to be a HDD). I had some similar problems with my latest computer, the DVD would only work when set as master.

You don't say if there is any drive set as primary master, if there is, check the jumper settings. If they don't work set as master/slave, try setting both as CS (Cable Select) where the drive on the end of the cable becomes the master.

Try the different setups, but I know mine stubbornly refused to work as slave.

Check the manufacturer's website (Memorex) for if there is a firmware update, it might help, but they usually only update the media/disks that can be read.

    Matt

Primary IDE Master LITON DVD ROM Primary IDE Slave Memorex DVD+-RAM 530. C:\WD 160GB HDD D:\WD250GB HDD E:\LITON DVD-ROM LTD163 ATA Device F:\Memorex DVD+-RAM 530L v1 ATA Device. Jumpers are set correctly. All drivers are up to date. I am thinking of Making the DVD+-RW the Primary Master, but, I'll probably have the same problem no matter where I install it.

I made the Primary IDE Master: Memorex DVD+-Ram 530 and the Primary IDE Slave: LITEON DVD ROM. OS recognized the drives and installed drivers. I then played a DVD concert disk in both drives, restarted and the Memorex and LITEON remained recognized by the BIOS. Thanx for yor help Mattman. I was gonna try your idea next but got a little lazy but you motivated me to just go ahead to open up the case and fix it.
