I need a disc scrubber so I can safely remove all data programs and the operating system so I can give my pc away w/o fear of a data loss.

I could not get DBAN Boot and Nuke to work.

    Windows XP Pro

    Thanks.

    Those over write data files.

    I want every thing gone.

I had one once before that booted from a floppy and when it finnished BIOS report "no operating system" when you tried to reboot.

Problem is this machine does not have a floppy drive.

I have to have one that will boot from a CD or a thumb drive.

OTH I guess I could just encrypt the whole drive with True crypt and uses a pass word like "Lb0Wp_!e+4)xP/51?,Y{>D^}9{[~U8+pFd;G+(F@<OyB< ". They would have to guess that pass word or break AES 256.

I solved the problem by removing the HD, taking it out to the garage, placed it on a concrete floor and beat on it with a sledge hammer.

    Patient applied for.

    LOL,

My next suggestion was a microwave oven but that probably would have messed up the oven too. :D

A sensible precaution Coleman but really unless you're worried about forensic depts obtaining the drive you can be a little too paranoid.

A Zero fill would suit most peoples needs.

I used a slight variation several years ago. Instead of a sledge hammer, I used an electric drill with a 3/8" bit and drilled several holes through the disks. Made the HDD useless and didn't splatter any splinters around or damage the garage floor.

Idenity Theft Is My Primary Concern

My Quicken (TM), other financial data and some medical information is what I am concerned about.

I picked up the encryption and drive washing habit because of a company that I used to work for.

They collected all kinds of information on people for insurance companies.
When they were through with the files they sent them to a public land fill w/o shredding them.

They had portable computers with this information on them and never encrypted them.

Since I retired they went to paperless files which are encrypted to government specs.

I don't know made the decisions on that but I suspect that the Feds made them do it in order to get government contrasts.

When the computers are retired they are returned to IT where they use a DOD algorithm program to wash the disc.

I have decided to go to full system encryption provided by TrueCrypt.

I have used it for years on thumb drives and files w/o a problem.

The price is right because it's free.
