I have Windows XP on my computer. If I wanted to open up my computer in safe mode exactly how would I go about doing that? Thank you very much. abm

There are times when a quick Google would get you an instant answer :) ....

    if the above step fail

    click on strat
    Run
    type msconfig
in system configuration utility click on the BOOT tab
check the box which says safeboot (If you want to boot in safe mode)
    click Apply
    and reboot

pccarehimanshu's solution should get you there but, if you tried f8 and that doesn't work, try the ctrl key. Some XP systems use it for safe mode. I know because I have one that does. :) Actually, I've tinkered with a lot of them that use it. Not sure why some use f8 and others use ctrl though. The only commonality I've been able to come up with is those I've worked on that use f8 were upgrades from Win 98, those that use ctrl were clean installs. The ones I asked about anyway. Can't say for sure if that's the reason or not though.

    Hi,

Just for the record, all the systems I've owned and those I repair for friends, were and are clean installs and mainly with XP. They all employ F8 to access SafeMode.

You know, I'll bet you're right. I'd have to check mine to find out but now that I think about it, I'm willing to bet it's Win98 I'm thinking of. Guess it's foot in mouth time. Duh. :)

As we have discussed before, this could leave you unable to access your system if you can't boot into safe-mode.

This happened recently and required this fix to get back to a working system.
