I am now getting beyond my former, unwitting comfort zone because of joining this site. (Also learning how much I did not know despite I fix everyone's puters.)

I have never once configured either of my desktops or my Lappy to hibernate or standby. Or bark or rollover either.

For. say, half hour intervals at most away from a booted system, are those desirable?

Next, I just looked into Power Options and see "UPS is turned off." and yet, I get packages from them all the time!

I followed up using the url XP offered in the interface:
    http://www.apc.com/winupgrade/index.cfm

Do I want this? Do I need this?

I always set the monitors to sleep after 20 mins and the HDDS to never.

I was moved to explore all this because of so many hibernate & standby issues posted on this site.

    This is NO KINDA EMERGENCY.

Thanks for any and all responses.

    Addendum re the uPS part:

    Just found this:
    http://www.wisegeek.com/do-i-need-an-uninterruptable-power-supply.htm

So my initial take now, is I do not need this. I use a good surge protector. when I shut a system down, I then unplug the surge protector strip from the outlet.

Is my current take on the UPS part right?

    Edit;

Just came upon this, Optiplex GX620 specific, but I think it applies broadly:

There's no doubt that unplugging everything will render it less vulnerable to power spikes from lightning or other line surges but most people prefer to leave things plugged in and rely on a good quality surge protector.

A good surge protector will provide input/output jacks for the phone line and cable as well as providing protection from power line surges. That advice should be biased by any past experience with lighting damage in your particular area since some area are more prone to lightning strikes than others.

You would be more vulnerable if your utilities came to the house via overhead wires as opposed to underground utilities. In either case it's a good idea to verify that they are properly grounded at the point of entry to your house. It's required by code and will be provided with a normal installation but it doesn't hurt to check and verify.

A UPS is generally not needed unless you experience frequent power outages. In addition to short term power failure protection, they also give better line surge protection than the normal surge protector. You'll have to judge whether one might be needed for your particular area.

Keep it that way. Windows power saving features ****.

In laptop case, I only use sleep (standby), while on battery.
That's the only case, I use any power feature.

    Hi, Surferdude,

Thanks for confirming the UPS part. I never saw the UPS before.

I believe I did not make it clear that my computer and every single peripheral are all plugged into the surge protector strip. Mine is made by CyberPower/

I leave everything plugged, but again, after shutting the system down, I pull the plug of the surge protector from the outlet. I pull ONE PLUG. No power at all is going to anything system related.

I live in an 18 story Landmark building here in Manhattan. Not only is everything perfectly maintained, but everything is inspected ongoing. We are always way, way above code in everything.

We do, of course, have power outages (brownouts, blackouts) here in NYC, These are rare but catastrophic events, given this is NYC. Last one lasted for 3 days.

Those happen, when they do, in the heat of summer when the grids and the often outdated system are overloaded.

I must assume in the unlikely event that happens when I am home and a system is on, and there is a spike in voltage, the surge protector will trip, thus preventing my mobo, everything else in the tower and all the peripherals from getting fried.

It's Good to have a personality, Broni! Check out the one and only Lewis Black's Red. White & ******* DVD.

Hilarious, pithy account of using expletives centering on his having been invited to perform at an important DC event where W was scheduled to be right at his side.

It will delight you, make you laugh out loud, and also validate you.

Edit: I just saw the third word of the actual title has been expunged. I would paste a link to the DVD on Amazon, but the URL has the same word. lol

I earlier marked this solved or resolved, and for the second time, it did not work.

    One more, sorry!

Please not to be insulted by this, but sometimes, when we hear hoofbeats and see a cloud of dust it's not zebra: do I assume correctly that you have plugged in both the docking station and the A/C adapter in other outlets? Do I assume correctly other things work properly when plugged into the outlet(s) in question?
