    I have a Netgear RP614 router.
Is it possible to 'throttle' the throughput of this router so to slow down downloads? I have a member of my family who uses my internet connection when they exceed their download limit of their ISP and then manages to exceed my download limit. I thought that if I could reduce the download 'rate' so that the internet connection was slow I might save my download limit.

What you're asking for will just cause the family member to be on-line longer to do what they want to do;)

    If you google-> parental control

I think you can find software that will limit "how much" bandwidth they can use which is a lot different then "how long" it takes to download stuff.

Exceeded limits seems to imply the best deterrent...charge him/her for bandwidth. Family member or not, fair is fair. If the person wants "something for no exchange" then point out the criminal aspects of that thinking. The person should just pay for more bandwidth from own isp.

I would think of throttling something other than the router. If the family member cannot manage their own ISP account, then I would not allow them the use of mine.

Block the ports that his/her file sharing program is using. That will get his/her attention.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions - believe me I have thought of most of them already but thought that it would be a lot easier (and pleasant) not to confront the family member but just to slow down their download speed so that they get so annoyed that they don't connect. When I reach my download limit my ISP reduces my 'bandwidth' to what they term "similar to a 28.8 modem' which in most cases is unusable (web sites time out before they load etc). Actually I cannot get them (my ISP) to admit it but I am positive that they reduce the 'speed' to MUCH less than 'similar to a 28.7 modem' just to annoy me into upgrading the plan to a more costly one. 95% of the year I don't even come near to my download allowance.
I would like to be able to reduce the connection speed of router ports (if possible) BEFORE (the next time) I run out of download allowance. The family member doesn't do this often as they usually don't live with me, it's when they visit for extended periods during holidays which might happen 3 or 4 times a year.

Hi jp, been there - done that. When my son was boarding at home, we had the same problem - running out of Broadband. He paid $10.00 a month for the next Plan up to 10Gigs, and when he left home I had to reduce it again as the wife and I were not using it.
Then the grandchildren came along and a similar problem - running out of Broadband. We've had to go through the same exercise but with a completely new Phone/Broadband Plan which gives us more Gigs and at a slightly reduced monthly cost.
Have a chat with your Telecoms and see if there are Plans that suit without too much increase in cost. Our Plan will reduce to Dial up speed (at no extra cost) if we exceed our usage, but it depends on the time of day and the number of Broadband users at the time. Merry Xmas. Neil.:D

As you're from Australia, I wonder how long it would be before the "strong arm of the law" will come knocking on your door.

I'm all for confronting family members & educating them about their behavior. So if you would go take them to a store & they start stealing you don't say anything either?

    Trust me Arie,

My daughter knows what is right and what is wrong but seems to think that whatever is in the house is for her to share. She thinks that because we travel overseas often (only because my wife goes to work simply to finance the trips) that we can afford to pay for things she uses (I could upgrade my plan but when she doesn't use the connection the plan is more than enough for my requirements). If I were to confront her about these things she would call me stingy.

Well, she is almost certainly downloading music/movies, otherwise she wouldn't use up your bandwidth... I would just block the P2P ports from the router. If she says anything, you can always play 'dumb' if you prefer not to confront her ;)

Being "stingy" (economic concern) is a worthy quality. If my kids called me stingy I would reply with something like, "That's correct, I am stingy. I do not earn bank president wages. Go rake the leaves or clean the house and we'll then talk about more bandwidth. "

I think perhaps you missed Arie's point. If she is P2P file sharing it's illegal and they are cracking down on it.
So unless you would like one of the well financed recording companies to make an example out of her I would get it stopped quickly.
