    Hello,

So i'm playing Strapping Young Lad's ALIEN disc (mmmm metal) and regardless of the track, the drive will decide to spit the CD out mid-song -- no click, blips, or skipping, just like it literally is puking out the CD because it hates metal music. Hilarious, but frustrating. Google was not helpful.

FWIW, if I have "Error Correction" turned on, playback skips a lot. If I turn it off, playback is fine but the disc gets spit out. Is that WMP11's crappy way of indicating that the CD is scratched? Not sure why it'd eject it if playback works flawlessly until the moment of ejection...

Have you tried the disk in another player?

Is it scratched or dirty? If so try cleaning it with mild soapy water wiping with a soft tissue from the centre to the outer edge (not round and round). If there are scratches, you might be able to find a freeware program that will try to read the disk and save the files to the hard drive. You might want to try using WMP to rip the tracks to MP3's.

It would be hoped that the disk is not faulty. Some can just have large amounts of errors in the media production system.

That seems to be some sort of "proprietary" HP drive made for them by Hitachi/LG. Is it in a HP computer? The model number should be listed in Device Manager, find it's manufacturer's (HP?) updates. It might need a firmware upgrade. If it is supplied by HP and you are running it on a different computer, you might, possibly, be out of luck correcting the problem.

Some burning programs add "virtual" optical drives. They can often cause problems.

    Matt
