I recently reinstalled Xp Pro on my laptop. I used the FAST wizard to transfer settings only. Since then everytime I boot, after I login and before the desktop displays I hear an error sound, and as soon as the desktop is displayed, I see an error " ..can't find "c:\Documents" and advises me to search for the missing file. Obviously there is some file (probably in the documents and settings folder) trying to load which was present on my old system but not on my new that was transferred when I reinstalled the FAST settings.
I have done a clean boot in MSCONFIG, start up items, services, etc
I have checked all the HKLM ... run keys in the registry
    checked event logs
    safe mode
    checked drivers loading with bootXP
    rootkit scan
    malwarebytes, hijack this, virus scan

nothing seems to stop this error from popping up.

    1. What loads after login but before the desktop?
    2. where else do scripts, or files load during bootup?
    3. is there a way to see the odifications the FAST wizard made?

    Thanks

    c:\documents found

I forgot about the wonderful tool sysinternals puts out called autoruns
ran it and found a number of "File not Found" entries, including a C:\Documents and settings\Profile name\lsass.exe in the HKLM\Software\Microsoft\windowsNT\Shell key. Apparently, as suspected, it didn't handle the spaces so it windows was trying to start the processes "c:\Documents ", "and ", "settings ", etc
Deleted that entry and all is well :):D

Hopefully you haven't caused any damage. For others in the future if you have these kind of errors don't delete the entry just surround them with quotes.

    ie change

    C:\Documents and settings\profile name\...

    to

    "C:\Documents and settings\profile name\... "

And as normal, back up your registry before editing it.
